Love flowers? Try the Endless Summer® The Original Bigleaf Hydrangea PP 15,298 (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer') as an outstanding ornamental shrub. This is the game-changing Hydrangea that really raised the bar for reblooming Hydrangeas.

It produces flower buds on both old wood left standing from the year before, and on new wood grown from the base this year. Simply put, this shrub just blooms its head off for you all summer long! It's a flower factory!

And what blooms! Eight-inch round, mop-head type flowers look so full and heavy you'll wonder at the plant's ability to support them. Don't worry, the stems are strong!

This deciduous shrub has a rounded growth habit. Long, dark green leaves are the perfect backdrop for its showy flowers. The blooms are clear pink in alkaline soils with higher pH and turn a rich, sapphire blue if planted in acidic soils with lower pH levels.

Just as the name implies, the repeating blooming nature of The Original Endless Summer® Hydrangea will provide an "endless summer" of Hydrangea blooms for your garden from spring to fall. It's certainly a Hydrangea that you won't want to miss.

How to Use The Original Endless Summer® Hydrangea in the Landscape

This wonderfully showy, smaller landscape plant has gained the respect of landscape architects over a wide range of hardiness zones. Large rounded flowers begin blooming in late spring and continue to be showy right into winter.

Use The Original Endless Summer® Hydrangeas as lovely foundation plants. They look wonderful when flanking either side of a front entrance.

They are amazing when repeated across the middle of your mixed shrub borders. Include them in your perennial gardens to add bold texture and bright color all season long.

You can also plant them in large containers. Decorate your entryway, use it on the pool deck or patio, or move them around anywhere you need a pop of color. They'll give you armloads of blooms for cut flower arrangements, too.

Try planting The Original Endless Summer® Hydrangeas as smaller informal hedges for a phenomenal look. Use along a walkway or fence to easily boost the charm!

For a tight, solid hedge, plant them 2 - 3 feet apart on center. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. You can also stagger the planting for a larger impact. Use a double row, planted in a zig-zagging pattern.

Take that concept a step further by creating a colorful mass planting to cover a wide, open area. Zig-zag the planting pattern and keep the bed weeded until the plants grow together. A simple trim in late winter is a small task to pay for the incredible show they put on.

Mix things up with other Hydrangea varieties! Try another mophead Summer Crush® Hydrangea or the radiant Blushing Bride Hydrangea! The soil pH will give you a vibrant range of pink flowers or blue blooms for you to enjoy! Or Twist-n-Shout® Hydrangea for Lacecap blossoms in pink or blue. Or try Limelight Hydrangea for steady lemon-lime blooms regardless of pH!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Growing in USDA zones 4 through 9, the Original Endless Summer® Hydrangea is a nice size shrub with showy, rounded mop head flowers when grown with a few simple requirements.

It grows best with morning sun access to dry the leaves. Planted in well-drained, slightly acidic and evenly moist soil. For the best display of leaf and flower color, give them an even amount of water regularly each week. Dry spells will cause leaf and flower browning.

In warmer climates, please select your planting site carefully to protect plants from the extremely hot afternoon sun. In the warmest summers, full sun in the afternoon might scorch these pretty plants.

The east side of a building or fence is usually a good option. Or, give them a spot where they will receive partial shade from a larger tree.

Each year, just as they start growing, trim the old flower heads back to healthy buds along that stem and any broken or damaged branches.

Be patient with The Original Endless Summer® Hydrangeas in early spring. They do require warmer soil and air temperatures to start growing.

The bloom color will depend on soil conditions. Test the pH level of your soil.

Want pink blooms? Add lime following directions to increase alkalinity.

Want blue flowers? Add Sulphur to slowly drop the acidity and use Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer in early spring and around the 4th of July. Use pine bark mulch which will slowly break down and help increase soil acidity.

In Zones 4 and 5, provide extra mulch late in the fall. Just dump it right on top of the stems, like you do your Rose bushes. As the plants start to wake up in the spring, carefully pull the mulch away from the stems.

You'll love the outstanding ornamental value and disease resistance from these game-changing gorgeous blooming Hydrangea bushes. Yes, they really do keep producing flower buds all summer long.

Just look at your summer pictures! You'll see the blooms covering these hardy plants all season long. They bloomed all summer to decorate your yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a continuously blooming Hydrangea?

Endless Summer® is a reblooming Hydrangea, it is not continuously blooming. 'Continuously blooming' is a bit misleading, because all Hydrangea shrubs are deciduous, and will take a break from blooming in the winter while they are dormant. But you will enjoy two flushes of flowers from this variety since it blooms on both new wood and again on old wood each year!

Do Endless Summer® Hydrangeas need full sun?

The Endless Summer® Original Hydrangea loves full sun when it is planted in continuously moist, organic soil in cooler growing zones. Typically Hydrangea plants grown in hot or drier climates prefer some part shade. Plant in at least 6 hours of sunlight a day for numerous and bigger blooms with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch and ample watering in the heat. They appreciate afternoon shade when temperatures are hottest.

What kind of Hydrangea is Endless Summer® original?

The Endless Summer® Hydrangea is a macrophylla variety of Hydrangea that has large blooms called 'mopheads' and large leaves 'Bigleaf Hydrangea'.

Do Endless Summer® Hydrangeas spread?

Endless Summer® Hydrangeas do not spread beyond their mature 3 - 5 feet width. They form tidy round bushes that won’t spread by suckers or runners.

When should I cut back my Endless Summer Hydrangea?

Hydrangeas like Endless Summer® bloom on both new and old wood, so to prevent removal of that summer's blooms, only prune your shrub in early spring just as you see new growth emerging to shape, remove old flower heads, and trim back dead growth.

Unsure

I am not sure if i am happy, tge plant came to me in full bloom. I was always told you never plant/repot or otherwise disturb plants until they are done blooming. It also is white, not blue (i was not told how to change the soil to make it blue), if that is even what needs to be done.

Debra—great question!

We truly appreciate your honest feedback and understand your hesitation.

Receiving a plant in full bloom can be a bit surprising, especially if you’ve heard that it's best not to disturb blooming plants. Fortunately, hydrangeas are quite resilient and the Endless Summer variety is bred to bloom on both old and new wood—so even if transplanted while blooming, it typically rebounds beautifully with continued care.

As for the flower color, you’re absolutely right that soil pH plays a big role! To encourage those iconic blue blooms, your soil needs to be more acidic (ideally with a pH between 5.2 and 5.5). Adding soil acidifiers such as aluminum sulfate can help shift the bloom color over time. We’re happy to walk you through this process if you’d like!

1. Coffee Grounds:
Used coffee grounds can gradually lower soil pH while also adding nitrogen. Just sprinkle them around the base of the plant and lightly work them into the top layer of soil.

2. Pine Needles or Pine Bark Mulch:
Both are naturally acidic and make excellent mulch that not only helps with pH but also retains moisture and suppresses weeds.

3. Compost with Fruit Scraps:
Compost that includes apple cores, citrus peels, or other acidic fruit waste can nudge the soil in the right direction while improving its overall health.

4. Peat Moss:
Incorporating peat moss into the soil is another highly effective and natural way to lower pH. It’s especially useful if you’re amending the soil before planting or during repotting.

5. Sulfur-Based Organic Products:
While not “kitchen” natural, elemental sulfur or products labeled “organic soil acidifiers” (often derived from natural sources) can safely and steadily reduce pH when used according to label directions.

Keep in mind, the change won't be instant—natural methods take a bit of time, but they’re plant-friendly and sustainable. A soil pH test kit can also be handy to track your progress!

Shes Beautiful!

Very first time planting this flower, coming from Houston Texas. I was a little nervous since these plants require a lot of care and water but she has been doing so well!!! I water her twice. Early morning before work (6am) and after sun down (after 7pm). I placed some mulch on the pot so that has been helpful at keeping the soil moist. I was really afraid of drowning her or giving too much water mostly in the early afternoon where the sun was starting to burn through leaves due to me giving it water at 5pm. Shes blossoming beautifully and cannot wait until shes fully open. I also recently purchased her back at the beginning/mid May. Very fast shipping too!

Hi there! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review for our Endless Summer Bigleaf Hydrangea. We're so happy to hear that it's doing well in your care and that you're taking such good care of her. It sounds like you have a great watering routine in place and the mulch is definitely a helpful addition. We hope you continue to enjoy watching her blossom and thank you for choosing our product. Happy gardening!

Fast growers!

I planted my hydrangeas about a year ago and they’ve gone from small and spindly to lush and beautiful. They are extremely thirsty plants, so I have been navigating that aspect, and I am nervously preparing to transfer them to larger pots to encourage more healthy growth!

Hello Marissa,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful progress with your hydrangeas! It’s fantastic to hear they’ve transformed from small and spindly to lush and beautiful in just a year. You’re absolutely right—hydrangeas do have big appetites when it comes to water, so managing their thirst can definitely be a bit of a balancing act.

Transferring them to larger pots sounds like a great next step to support their continued healthy growth. When you repot, be sure to choose rich, well-draining soil and try to maintain consistent moisture without letting the roots sit in soggy conditions. Additionally, making sure your pots have adequate drainage holes can prevent overwatering issues.

If you’d like, we also have some detailed hydrangea care guides and watering schedules on our website that could help ease your transition to bigger pots.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need further tips along the way—we’re always happy to help!

Beautiful plants

We purchased sixteen of these hydrangeas in the #3 containers and they arrived looking absolutely beautiful. Thick and full, with plenty of blooms. I had never ordered shrubs by mail before and was totally floored. We’ve since planted them all and they’re thriving. I tell everyone who asks about nature hills! And will definitely be back in the spring to order more plants!

Endless Summer Hydrangea's

Too soon to tell write back in the spring and I will let you know if they survive a winter in Door County WI. but we got them in the ground and so far at least all is well.

Dear David,

Thank you so much for sharing an update on your Endless Summer Hydrangeas! We truly appreciate you planting them and taking the time to let us know how things are going so far. Winter in Door County can be quite the test for many plants, but these hydrangeas are known for their strong resilience when planted in appropriate conditions.

As you prepare for the colder months, a little extra winter protection could help give your hydrangeas the best chance to thrive, such as applying a layer of mulch around the base to insulate the roots and possibly covering the plants with burlap if extreme cold or wind is expected. We’d love to hear back from you come spring to see how they fared!

If you have any questions about winter care or need advice mastering the needs specific to your region, feel free to reach out anytime. We’re here to support you through each season of growing success.
