Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 5-9
We’d all like to find something tall, dark and handsome waiting for us in the garden! Maybe out on the porch or patio too? Tall Dark & Traditional Oregano (Oregano vulgare 'TallDark&Traditional') may not be what you were thinking of, but it also won’t break any hearts either! This rugged garden standard is aromatic, flavorful and highly ornamental in its own right!
Forming taller, upright growing clumps instead of the more sprawling mats other Oregano grow in, Tall, Dark & Traditional reaches up to 2 feet in height and just over a foot spread. Summer covers your plant in gorgeous pink blossoms, as well as bees and butterflies!
Like traditional Oregano, these have textured green leaves that are aromatic and full of Mediterranean flavor! But unlike other Oregano, Tall Dark and Traditional leaves are broad and densely growing. Forming clumps of basal rosettes that branch and grow upright instead of sprawl.
Planting and Application:
Like most things that are Tall and Dark, this Oregano is also strong! Very rich and full-flavored, this is for recipes that need some major flavor-boosting! Traditional herbs for Mediterranean recipes, even the flowers are edible and are lovely garnish as well as salad toppings, drink and plating décor as well as ideal to use in floral arrangements! The stems will be tall enough for a vase and add delicate pink filler and texture to bouquets!
Oregano isn’t just a kitchen garden herb, it’s also an ornamental flowering garden plant, a vital Pollinator plant for bees, and an outstanding addition to your Cottage beds and Perennial borders! Use as a specimen in porch pots, or in mixed planters around your garden, patio, balcony or even window box in the sun!
