Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best pink flower production and that signature dark green foliage, plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light daily). It can handle partial shade, but you will notice fewer blooms and the fall bronze-purple color won't be as intense.
  • Soil: These plants prefer well-drained soil that doesn't stay soggy, as they hate "wet feet." If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost at planting to improve drainage, or site them in a raised bed to keep the roots oxygenated.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Spirea twice a week to ensure the root system anchors deeply into the soil. Once established, this variety is quite drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. Inconsistent watering can lead to smaller flower clusters and may cause the leaf tips to turn brown from stress.

Pruning Tips

Superstar™ Spirea blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. Think of it like a refreshing haircut; shearing the top few inches of the stems encourages a flush of fresh wood which results in more prolific summer flowers. Deadheading the spent blossoms in July can also trick the plant into producing a second, lighter wave of blooms.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell to fuel the season's growth. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall. This prevents the plant from pushing out tender new growth that won't have time to "harden off" before the first frost, leaving it vulnerable to winter damage.

This summer, wouldn't you love to step outside into your garden and be greeted by shrubs full of flowers? And wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to prune those shrubs, or coddle those shrubs or even think about those shrubs at all, just enjoy them? Now we've got your attention, we'd like to introduce the First Editions® Superstar™ Spirea (Spiraea x bumalda 'Denistar' PP22,432) that completely embodies it all!

This compact plant starts the spring with deep green foliage overall. Then, as new growth emerges, it is an eye-catching scarlet red. The two-toned effect is stunning! As it starts to warm up, Superstar™ is just getting started. Clusters of apple-pink blossoms cover the plant all summer long. The show doesn't stop when the flowers fade, though. In the fall the leaves turn an excellent golden bronze that lights up your borders.

The flat clusters of tiny flowers appear in varying mauvy pinks that butterflies adore! In true superstar fashion, Superstar™ Spirea is showy and memorable. But unlike many superstars, Superstar™ isn't a diva. This entertaining shrub stays a compact size and fits just about any sunny spot you have for her, even a large container. Pollinators will adore these nectar resources, so include them in pollinator gardens for a delightful double dose of beauty!

Planting and Application:

Not only is it beautiful and easy, but it fits the current trend of smaller plants for smaller gardens. Not to worry if you are blessed with a larger garden! Superstar™ looks great in big beds and borders and is a fantastic foundation plant. It definitely plays well with others! Add color to foundation plantings and as a facer shrub to hide the bare leggy stems of larger shrubs and around trees. They're also the perfect size for containers and planters around your porch and patio!

With a smaller height and great spread, these are great for groundcover and filling large swaths of ground with color. Use to hold soil on hillsides while saving you from having to mow a tricky slope. Top a retaining wall or let Superstar™ or line a pathway or sidewalk with low-maintenance flowering shrubs!

  • Bright Pinkish Blossoms
  • Lush Deep Green Foliage
  • Fast Growing & Great Fall Color
  • Space Saving & Great in Containers & Planters
  • Low Groundcover, Edging, Facer Shrub & Specimen

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Spiraea enjoys full sun and thrives in moderately moist soil that's well-drained. Appreciating a well-mulched site that has good organic matter, Spirea are equally as at home in poor, rocky soil and low moisture once established. Shear or deadhead immediately after flowering to clean the mound and keep it tidy.

  • Full Sun
  • Moist to Average Moisture Needs
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune/Deadhead After Flowering
  • Carefree & Low Maintenance
