Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-8
This summer, wouldn't you love to step outside into your garden and be greeted by shrubs full of flowers? And wouldn't it be great if you didn't have to prune those shrubs, or coddle those shrubs or even think about those shrubs at all, just enjoy them? Now we've got your attention, we'd like to introduce the First Editions® Superstar™ Spirea (Spiraea x bumalda 'Denistar' PP22,432) that completely embodies it all!
This compact plant starts the spring with deep green foliage overall. Then, as new growth emerges, it is an eye-catching scarlet red. The two-toned effect is stunning! As it starts to warm up, Superstar™ is just getting started. Clusters of apple-pink blossoms cover the plant all summer long. The show doesn't stop when the flowers fade, though. In the fall the leaves turn an excellent golden bronze that lights up your borders.
The flat clusters of tiny flowers appear in varying mauvy pinks that butterflies adore! In true superstar fashion, Superstar™ Spirea is showy and memorable. But unlike many superstars, Superstar™ isn't a diva. This entertaining shrub stays a compact size and fits just about any sunny spot you have for her, even a large container. Pollinators will adore these nectar resources, so include them in pollinator gardens for a delightful double dose of beauty!
Planting and Application:
Not only is it beautiful and easy, but it fits the current trend of smaller plants for smaller gardens. Not to worry if you are blessed with a larger garden! Superstar™ looks great in big beds and borders and is a fantastic foundation plant. It definitely plays well with others! Add color to foundation plantings and as a facer shrub to hide the bare leggy stems of larger shrubs and around trees. They're also the perfect size for containers and planters around your porch and patio!
With a smaller height and great spread, these are great for groundcover and filling large swaths of ground with color. Use to hold soil on hillsides while saving you from having to mow a tricky slope. Top a retaining wall or let Superstar™ or line a pathway or sidewalk with low-maintenance flowering shrubs!
- Bright Pinkish Blossoms
- Lush Deep Green Foliage
- Fast Growing & Great Fall Color
- Space Saving & Great in Containers & Planters
- Low Groundcover, Edging, Facer Shrub & Specimen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Spiraea enjoys full sun and thrives in moderately moist soil that's well-drained. Appreciating a well-mulched site that has good organic matter, Spirea are equally as at home in poor, rocky soil and low moisture once established. Shear or deadhead immediately after flowering to clean the mound and keep it tidy.
- Full Sun
- Moist to Average Moisture Needs
- Any Well-Drained Soil
- Prune/Deadhead After Flowering
- Carefree & Low Maintenance
