Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best 'Firecracker' foliage color and a dense, tight growth habit, plant this sedum where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can handle partial shade, you will immediately see the tradeoff: the vibrant red color will be less intense, and the stems may become leggy and flop.
  • Soil: Sedum is a stonecrop that demands sharp drainage; it absolutely hates sitting in soggy feet, which leads to crown rot. If you have heavy clay soil, incorporate a generous amount of coarse sand or grit along with compost to improve aeration. For naturally sandy soil, the addition of compost will help retain just enough moisture without creating a waterlogged environment.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, water your 'Firecracker' deeply once a week until its root system is well established, especially during periods of low rainfall. Once mature, this sedum is wonderfully drought tolerant and asks for very little supplemental water, thriving on neglect. Inconsistent watering, however, will stress the plant and result in much smaller, duller leaves and less robust blooms, so give it a drink only when the foliage looks thin or withered.

Pruning Tips

Like most groundcover sedums, this variety blooms on new wood, so the best time for a tidy-up is in late winter or very early spring before fresh growth begins. Simply cut back the old flower stalks and any dead foliage down to a few inches above the ground, which is much like giving it a fresh haircut before the season starts. This simple maintenance removes last year's weathered debris and encourages a denser, more attractive mat of colorful new foliage for the spring and summer.

Fertilizer Needs

These are tough, low-maintenance plants that actually prefer poor or average soil, so remember that too much fertility will make the stems weak and soft. Apply a light application of a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10, just once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. A key tip is to avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or late-season feeding, as this encourages soft growth that is more susceptible to winter damage and rotting.

Will Sedum come back every year?

  • Sedum are reliable perennials so long as they have well-drained soil year-round.
