Enjoy pears starting in summer with the charming Summercrisp Pear (Pyrus communis 'Summer Crisp'). The great-tasting fruit has a crisp, juicy texture and mildly sweet flavor that is prized for a variety of uses.
These rugged trees were developed at the University of Minnesota, so are quite cold hardy. Summercrisp Pear trees enjoy a well-deserved reputation for reliable annual production. It's rare to have issues with late winter frosts with this variety.
Summercrisp’s decorative nature is a bonus, too. Use it as an "edible ornamental" tree in Edible Landscaping design plans. It even requires less space due to its slightly smaller stature.
Even the branch structure is superior. Vertical branches rarely need pruning, and that's a huge benefit for beginning gardeners.
If you love pears, then versatile Summercrisp is a terrific choice. Like growers across the country, let Summercrisp become a favorite in your garden this year.

How to Use Summercrisp Pear Tree in the Landscape
Live in the city and crave fresh fruit from your own tree? Summercrisp Pear is the answer.
Urban tolerant, this durable tree can be grown for its good looks and for its fruit. Use them in a mulched garden bed as a flowering shade tree "with benefits"; or tuck them into a tiny lot with summer pruning.
It’s so easy to keep fruit trees pruned to any size. All you need to do is spend a few minutes in summer tip pruning back to the height you want.
Try them in a high-density planting with other varieties. Include other European Pears, or try a super-juicy Asian Pear tree for a pollination partner.
Create a hard-working hedgerow along your fence by planting 7 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant Summercrisp Pear trees in full sun for best results. You will also want a spot that has good air circulation.
They prefer well-drained soil types, and do not display a tolerance to standing water. Use a raised bed or mounded planting site to improve drainage, if needed.
Provide your trees with a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Apply a thick layer of mulch over the root system and spread it out to 3 feet past the canopy. Pull mulch back several inches all around the trunk.
With vertical branching, Summercrisp is a perfect choice for newbie edible plant gardeners. You'll rarely have to prune or sculpt the branches.
Tip prune to control size in summertime, as you like. Remove crossing or broken branches just about any time of year.
Summercrisp fruit is crisp, delicious and beautiful. They'll make a fantastic presentation on the tree, and on a dessert plate. Enjoy homegrown fruit with help from Nature Hills. Order today!
