Add a charismatic shade tree and gain a garden feature with glossy, red new leaves and deep burgundy fall color! Stunning Summer Sensation Red Maple (Acer rubrum 'Katicole') has an upright, columnar habit and is cold-hardy to USDA Growing Zone 4.
Summer Sensation is a brilliant modern selection of a native Red Maple that works perfectly in today's landscape. Showy in multiple seasons, it features a nice branching habit and incredible color in spring and fall.
Planting and Application:
The beautiful new foliage emerges bright red in spring and stays colorfast until well into summer. You'll enjoy these "right-sized" shade trees on the southwest corner of your lot in a mulched bed underplanted with Yew and Hydrangea bushes and your favorite spring-flowering bulbs.
- Red Maples tolerate a variety of soils, including clay. Summer Sensation would make a grand member of a biodiverse backyard planting.
- Use one in a lawn planting, or to anchor your foundation planting. Plant them 25 feet away from the corner of your home to allow room for upkeep and maintenance.
- Wherever you use these compelling trees becomes a focal point in your landscape design. Maximize their impact with outdoor seating placed on the north or east side for blissful protection from the sun from noon onwards to evening.
- This classy selection can also be used on corporate or commercial lots.. Draw eyes to your property with their high pigmentation and outstanding growth habit.
- Naturalize this magnificent native cultivar on large lots along creek beds or Rain Garden berms. Plant an undulating copse with three or five trees...vary the spacing between and from front to back for the most natural-looking results.
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Red Maples prefer rich, slightly acidic soil that stays evenly moist. In alkaline soils, you'll want to support them with soil amends like sulfur and a three-inch layer of pine bark mulch spread to three feet past the canopy.
- For the fastest growth rate, plant in full sun with at least six hours of light a day. Supply a regular schedule of supplemental water to keep your tree healthy and stress-free.
- Encourage the roots with Nature Hills Root Booster used in the planting hole. Get expert planting tips from the NatureHills.com Horticulture team.
- Prune in late winter to correct shape and remove broken branches. Fertilize with an acid-loving formula according to the label directions.
