Red Maples tolerate a variety of soils, including clay as long as it drains well. Prefer rich, slightly acidic soil that stays evenly moist. In alkaline soils, you'll want to support them with soil amends like sulfur and a three-inch layer of pine bark mulch spread to three feet past the canopy. Prune in late winter to correct shape and remove broken branches. Fertilize with an acid-loving formula according to the label directions.
