Delivery and Shipping
Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements

Growing Zones 3-9
If you have a small yard, choosing the right shade tree can be a big deal. That's especially true if you need shade quickly. While there are many options you could choose from, we highly recommend Summer Red Maple Tree (Acer rubrum 'HOSR'). It's a wonderful choice!
With a dense but narrow canopy, it provides cool summer shade. It's also a tree that is fast-growing but won't take over your whole landscape in terms of size.
You'll love the skinny growth habit of this stunning tree. Summer Red is one of the best compact Red Maple trees!
This pretty tree also gives you colorful foliage to enjoy in spring, summer, and fall. Springtime leaves emerge burgundy red and give you a welcome visual treat after a long winter. Next, the hard-working summer shade leaves perform a color change into dark, purplish green. They'll protect you and your family and friends from the hot summer sun.
Then in autumn, once the nights start getting chilly, the younger leaves turn beautiful orange or purple, while the older leaves turn yellow. Overall, Summer Red Maple delivers a spectacular fall color display!
Landscape Application:
A classic use for Maple trees is to plant one or more on the south or southwest side of your house. You'll gain relief from the summer heat and even cut energy costs. But, don't worry. Because this deciduous tree loses its leaves in winter, you'll still gain warmth from the winter sun.
There are many ways to use this incredible tree. A single tree can be planted in a lawn and allowed to grow alone as a magnificent specimen. The uniform branching structure gives it an even, symmetrical profile.
A row of Summer Red Maples can be planted along a street for a wonderful display to set off the house to the neighborhood. Plant them 30 feet apart, measuring from the trunk of one to the trunk of the next.
March them along the back of your property or add them into a mixed tree border with Pines, Spruces, Birch, and Oak. They'll add so much zip to your garden design plan with their gorgeous foliage.
A more novel idea is to use this water-loving plant in a Rain Garden. Best suited for the Mesic, or Middle Zone, Summer Red Maple will help hold runoff water until it can soak in the ground. You can also use this lovely tree in a waterfront home or lake property. It will handle more water in the soil than other Maple trees.
Consider creating a large garden bed and using Summer Red Maple as a really special focal point. Add evergreen shrubs on either side. Add winter interest by including Ornamental Grass and Red Twigged Dogwoods, or Viburnum shrubs that produce colorful berries.
Use several to create an informal grouping on the south side of a patio, climbing structure, or tennis court. Your outdoor activities will be so much more fun in the shade!
Summer Red Maple tolerates urban conditions well. They have commonly been used as street trees in many municipalities. That ought to tell you something about their easy-care nature!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant your Maple in full sun for the best color and in a well-draining location where its roots won’t get soggy. Regular moisture for new trees is necessary to get your tree established, but once they are settled, this Maple becomes highly adaptable and it will tolerate wetter soils better than other Maples.
Disease-resistant and strong, the "right-sized" Summer Red Maple is easy to plant, and even easier to care for. Once established, you'll be impressed by how quickly they grow to provide shade to your family.
It won't need very much pruning with its rounded uniform canopy. However, if needed, dormant pruning in late winter is suggested but light pruning can be done into spring.
