Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this shrub at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. While it can survive in partial shade, the vibrant dark purple foliage will fade to a muddy green and flower production will drop significantly without full sun.
  • Soil: Plant in soil that drains well, as Weigelas hate having "wet feet" and can develop root rot in soggy conditions. If you have heavy clay soil, mix in compost or plant on a slight mound to improve drainage.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist (but not soaking) for the first year while the root system establishes itself. Once established, Stunner® Weigela is moderately drought tolerant, though inconsistent watering during high heat can cause the foliage to scorch or drop early.

Pruning Tips

This plant blooms on "old wood" (growth from the previous year), so the best time to prune is immediately after the main flush of flowers fades in late spring. Simply trim back the branches that just finished blooming to shape the plant; this encourages fresh growth that will set the stage for next year’s show and potential reblooming in the fall.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer once in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer, as high nitrogen late in the season pushes tender new growth that won't harden off in time for winter freezes.
