Pecans are great landscape trees! They provide, shade, beauty and shelter for wildlife and best of all - delicious healthy nuts! The Stuart Pecan Tree (Carya illinoensis 'Stuart') is an old-time favorite! This is a stand-out among Pecan varieties is one of the most popular Pecan Trees in the Southeastern US. A variety was started in Mississippi by J.R. Lassabe, but thank Colonel Stuart for making it popular.

The Stuart is a hardy, upright tree, strong and sturdy it doesn't need you to fuss over it. It requires less maintenance compared to its other Pecan family members, which leaves you more time to enjoy sitting under its shade with a good book while you wait for the delicious nuts to ripen. The lush foliage all summer is cooling and fills out the tree's magnificent canopy until fall.

Its nuts are medium-sized but still bigger than you'd buy in the store! Stuart produces roughly 50-55 nuts per pound with a heavy shell. Stuart can take a bit longer to start producing nuts than other Pecans, but the wait is definitely worth it! Surprisingly cold-tolerant, growers in zone 5 and up can enjoy the fruits of their labor for years with a single tree! Stuart is a Type II Pecan and needs a Type I Pecan for maximum pollination.

Planting and Application:

Enjoy lush foliage and cooling shade over your home and garden beds that will reduce cooling and watering bills, as well as boost your home's value with a legacy tree for generations! Wildlife too will enjoy nesting and sheltering in these majestic large specimens!

  • Fantastic Shade Tree
  • Loads of Good-Sized Pecans
  • Heavy Shell For Storage

The Stuart Pecan tree will adapt to most soil types and does well in full sunlight or moderate shade when it's younger, however, it does best in full sun when it has established. Just give it a pollinator partner nearby for the largest harvest, good watering and plenty of room to grow, then sit back and enjoy the shade.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture To Establish
  • Mulch Well, Prune When Dormant
  • Scab Resistant
  • Cold Hardy

Stick in a Pot

Although it arrived undamaged and is just a "stick in a pot," I'm an optimist that it will do well with a few signs of health: a few crown leafs and several new buds on the "trunk." Nice size (almost 5') and will keep in shipping container until it leafs out. Happy with the size, shipping and apparent health of this plant that is coming out of its winter dormancy. Happy so far.

Dear John,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that your Stuart Pecan Tree arrived safely and that you’re optimistic about its potential—those early signs of life, like a few crown leaves and new buds, are wonderful indicators that your tree is coming out of dormancy strong. Your plan to keep it in the shipping container until it leafs out is wise, as it can help protect the young tree during this delicate transition period.

As your tree grows, be sure to provide plenty of sunlight and water it consistently but carefully—not too much so the soil remains just moist, not soggy. If you notice any changes or have questions as the season progresses, we’re here for you to offer advice whenever needed.

Wishing you happy planting,
The Nature Hills Plant Experts

Hi JohnRascal,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review of your Stuart Pecan Tree! We’re delighted to hear you’re feeling optimistic—and you’re absolutely right to expect signs of new life like crown leaves and buds as it wakes from dormancy. Keeping it comfortably grouped in its stable shipping container until it leafs out is a smart approach, helping to protect those delicate new growths.

As the tree begins to develop, a good tip is to gradually introduce it to more sunlight while maintaining consistent watering (but avoid soggy soil) to encourage strong roots and healthy shoots. Also, watching the temperature to prevent any late frost stress will support robust growth.

Should you have any questions or want plant care pointers along the way, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to assist you in nurturing your tree from “stick” to splendid!

Rooting for your garden’s success,
