Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Allstar Strawberries require at least 6 to 8 hours of full, direct sun daily to produce sweet, firm berries. While they can survive in partial shade, you will notice significantly lower yields and the fruit may lack that deep red color and high sugar content.
  • Soil: These plants thrive in loose, well drained soil rich in organic matter, similar to a crumbly chocolate cake. If you have heavy clay that holds too much water, plant them in raised beds or incorporate compost to improve drainage and prevent crown rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year of establishment, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, providing about 1 inch of water per week. Once mature, the plants are more resilient, but inconsistent watering during fruit development leads to smaller, misshapen berries and stressed runners. Aim to water at the base of the plant to keep the leaves dry, which helps prevent common fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Since Allstar is a June-bearing variety, it produces one large crop in early summer rather than small batches all year. After the final harvest, mow or shear the foliage down to about 2 inches above the crown to rejuvenate the patch and clear out old, diseased leaves. This "summer haircut" encourages the plant to focus its energy on developing strong fruit buds for the following year.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer or a dedicated berry food in early spring before growth begins and again immediately after your summer renovation. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall, as this stimulates tender new growth that can be easily killed by the first hard frost. A steady supply of potassium is more important for fruit quality than pushing excessive leaf growth.

Strawberry plants prefer full sun and enriched well-drained soil. Provide regular moisture to support the formation of those fat juicy fruits! A layer of mulch and compost over the area each spring keeps the plants stress-free. It is best when you snip off their runners the first year. When the second year comes around, you can snip and replant your runners elsewhere each spring. Just be sure to give your Allstar Strawberry some space to grow and thrive. Clean the mounds or beds in the early spring to remove old foliage.
