Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This shrub performs best in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light daily to produce the densest carpet of yellow blooms. While it can handle partial shade, you will notice fewer flowers and a more open, leggy growth habit.
  • Soil: Aim for well drained soil that does not stay soggy after a rain. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" can lead to root rot in this variety.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your St. John's Wort twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the plant is established, it is remarkably drought tolerant and usually only needs supplemental water during extreme summer heat waves. If you let it get too dry during the budding phase, you might see smaller flowers or a shorter blooming window.

Pruning Tips

This plant blooms on new wood, meaning the flowers grow on the fresh stems produced in the current year. The best time to prune is in early spring before new growth begins, cutting the entire plant back by about a third. This act is like a "reset button" that encourages a flush of vigorous new stems and maintains a tidy, rounded shape.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer once in early spring as the first green leaves appear to fuel the summer bloom cycle. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this triggers soft new growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This late season growth is very susceptible to winter kill and can weaken the overall health of the shrub.

Description

Bright buttercups for butterflies on a bush! No color is as cheery as the color yellow, and very few flowers can touch Sunny Boulevard® for its bright yellow flowers. Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Sunny Boulevard® St. John's Wort (Hypericum x SUNNY BOULEVARD 'Deppe') is a beautiful and strong hybrid American native. It blooms all summer, offering a very long season of color with its bright yellow buttercup-type flowers.

This shrub is lacy and soft on the outside, with its soft grey-green leaves and graceful mounding habit, but it has an iron constitution. It is evergreen in all but the most severe winters. You can count on this plant as a mainstay in your garden. In the autumn, shiny brown capsules appear to add fall and winter interest to your garden beds and borders!

Don't let the cheery flowers and soft foliage fool you, this plant is a tough fighter! St. John's Wort makes itself right at home, even spreading out a little to form nice colonies! Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grows into a tidy 2-3 feet in height and spreads a bit wider at maturity. St. John's Wort is also a beneficial herb and has long been used to relieve everything from anxiety to inflammation. While we don't recommend using landscaping Hypercum medicinally, just the sunny blooms and the sheer amount of butterflies that arrive are sure to lift your spirits!

Planting and Application:

Though you can prune up St. John's Wort and it will be fine with it, most people prefer the 'wild' native-looking accent it brings to your garden. St. Johns Wort maintains a tidy 'scruffiness' to formal plantings and cottage gardens, and even brightening garden beds as a backdrop! Sunny Boulevard® as well as fitting in perfectly in informal country borders. Any way you style it, St. John's Wort compliments your individual garden design!

Pair Sunny Boulevard® with other pollinator and native cultivar plants that will show off their graceful, natural form and fit into a naturalized planting! Baby Blue Eyes, 'Little Joe' Joe-Pye Weed, or Paprika Yarrow, for instance, are good companions and their colors will look great with that Sunny Boulevard® yellow.

The 3-4 foot wide-spreading nature of these plants makes them perfect for erosion control, on steep slopes, and en masse. Need to fill an area with sunshine and butterflies? Plant a few St. John's Wort and sit back and relax!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

St. John's Wort is not particular about soil pH levels and is particularly suited for urban conditions, pollution, etc. St. John's Wort is easy-care when grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It prefers moist, rich, sandy loams and tolerates some drought. Deer seldom bother this plant! Just be sure to provide well-drained soils since Hypericum cannot tolerate wet feet! Apply a generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and insulate the root system from heat and winter's chill. Sunny Boulevard® blooms on new wood, so prune in early spring to clean the mound and control its size and shape.

  • Full Sun & Some Partial Shade
  • Vigorous Growing Deciduous Flowering Shrub

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mature height and width of Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort?

  • Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort reaches 2-3 feet tall and spreads slightly wider at maturity in zones 4-8. This native shrub naturally forms colonies over time, so give it room to spread for the best naturalized look.

Is Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort drought tolerant once established?

  • Yes, Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort is quite drought tolerant once established. This tough hybrid has an "iron constitution" and thrives in zones 4-8 despite its delicate appearance. Once the root system develops, it requires minimal watering and actually prefers well-draining soil.

How do I prune Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort, and when is the best time?

  • Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort tolerates pruning well but looks best left natural. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins if you want to control its 2-3 foot spread. Light pruning maintains its graceful mounding habit while heavy pruning works for formal gardens.

Is Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort deer resistant?

  • St. John's Wort is generally deer resistant due to its natural compounds that deer tend to avoid. This tough shrub's iron constitution includes natural defenses that make it unpalatable to browsing wildlife. Plant it in zones 4-8 for reliable, low-maintenance color that deer will likely leave alone.

How should I space Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort plants when planting multiple?

  • Space Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort plants 3-4 feet apart since they spread wider than their 2-3 foot height at maturity. This allows room for their natural colony-forming habit while maintaining good air circulation. Shop at Nature Hills for this long-blooming native that thrives in zones 4-8.

Does Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort need winter protection, like mulching roots?

  • Sunny Boulevard™ St. John's Wort is cold-hardy in zones 4-8 and typically doesn't require winter protection. This tough shrub stays evergreen except in the most severe winters. A light mulch layer can help in zone 4 or exposed locations.
