Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Spreading English Yew is incredibly versatile, thriving in everything from full sun to deep shade. While it handles shade better than almost any other evergreen, planting it in full sun (6 or more hours) results in the densest, most compact growth.
  • Soil: These plants require excellent drainage and will not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water. If your site has heavy clay, mix in organic compost or plant the root ball slightly above the soil line in a mound to ensure the roots can breathe.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide deep watering twice a week to help the root system bridge the gap from the container to your local soil. Once established, this yew is remarkably drought tolerant and can handle dry spells without much fuss. Be careful not to overwater in shady spots where evaporation is slower, as soggy soil is the quickest way to stress the plant and cause needle drop.

Pruning Tips

Yews are unique among evergreens because they can sprout from old wood, meaning you can perform a heavy "haircut" without leaving permanent bald spots. The best time to prune is in late winter or very early spring before the soft new growth emerges. This timing allows the plant to quickly cover your pruning cuts with a fresh layer of green foliage as the weather warms up.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer designed for evergreens in early spring to jumpstart the growing season. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers after mid summer. Late season nitrogen pushes out tender new growth that will not have enough time to harden off before the first freeze, leading to unsightly winter burn.

The wavy, flowing, shiny deep-green foliage of Spreading English Yew (Taxus baccata 'Repandens') adds distinction and curiosity to the landscape! You'll appreciate the soft, forest-green needles, hardiness, and useful, compact shape!

This evergreen shrub features soft, sickle-shaped needles and an undulating and rippling form. The new growth lifts upwards and the old growth nods down. The double rank and file needles and dense growth make this a fantastic low hedge or border plant.

Coral-red seed-bearing cones accentuate this shrub if a male is nearby to pollinate it. Birds love snapping up these seeds and also take shelter and nest in the dense branching all year round!

Rarely requiring pruning, these easy-care, spreading shrubs form low mounds 2-4' tall, but will eventually cover an impressive 12-15' spread! These shrubs thrive throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 7 and handle a wide range of sun-to-shade conditions.

Planting and Application:

The shaggy appearance of Spreading English Yew is perfect for informal backdrops to Perennial and Cottage garden beds, along Foundations, or facer plantings for immense curb appeal! In fact, some gardeners never prune them at all to enjoy the fluffy, organic shape "au natural".

Great atop retaining walls and Rock Gardens where these wide-spreading branches can tumble and spill over the rocks. Yew are verdant border and perimeter plants, defining and accenting garden beds.

The unique branching takes the spotlight as a specimen or focal point, especially when highlighted on a berm or raised bed. Plus Yew are inspiring among Asian-inspired and Zen gardens. Even containers and planters in the sun or shade can handle about anything your landscape

Use atop that difficult-to-mow slope for erosion control, while lending a steady evergreen presence. Tolerant of urban conditions and pollution, Spreading English Yew works along the road or driveway, even atop Rooftop gardens and Balconies!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy, low-maintenance and long-lived, the Spreading English Yew adapts to a wide range of sun. Tolerant of full sun, especially in cooler growing zones, and full shade in the warmest zones, and everything in between! Any moist, well-drained soil is fine, but they can't tolerate soggy soil. However, a thick layer of mulch over the root system insulates and holds more moisture throughout the year. Evergreens appreciate a good drink before the winter to help avoid windburn. Add Nature Hills Root Booster in the planting hole for life-long, symbiotic support of the tiny feeder roots.

You can prune or shear it to control the height, but that's just a quick job once it reaches the height that you would like it to be. Some like to prune the tops into a point for a narrow formal pointed evergreen. Or, let it grow naturally into tall hedges. Older plants can be rejuvenated by trimming out longer portions of the plant back to a part of the stem that still has needles on it.

Please note the red berries of Taxus can be toxic, so be careful not to ingest them. Your birds, however, will snap them up greedily!
