Let Nature Hills formally introduce you to the Southern Gentleman Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman') and bring some dramatic green presence to your landscape this year!
A large shrub with a multi-stemmed growing habit, this Holly will fill your landscape with good size, and color throughout the growing season!
A bold, deciduous Holly, Southern Gentleman has great early spring foliage, lovely white flowers in mid-summer, and even fall color!
The inconspicuous, white flowers appear in mid-summer, but while they may be inconspicuous to us, the local beneficial pollinators will love them!
Southern Gentleman Winterberry, Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman', is a male selection that is used to pollinate the female Winterberry - Ilex 'Winter Red' and Ilex 'Sparkleberry'. You'll need both male and female plants to produce those berries that are famous on all Winterberry specimens!
Generally just one male Winterberry 'Southern Gentleman' will pollinate up to 10 female plants, so you can easily have a fence-line of bright berries all season long to adorn your winter landscape when planted among the ladies.
A vigorous growing, upright rounded plant with glossy, dark green summer foliage, Southern Gentleman turns yellow-green to purple-bronze in fall. The foliage is lightly toothed and rough, providing a strong presence throughout the year.
How to Use Southern Gentleman Winterberry Holly In The Landscape
An easy to grow, sizable Holly, Southern Gentleman looks fantastic as a tall privacy row or back of the garden hedge planting! Providing a stalwart wall of green and a refreshing woodland garden feel. The upright, rounded habit makes Southern Gentleman stand out in the shrub border.
Standing as a sturdy line along the edge of the woods, and as verdant mass plantings, Winterberry are lovely for naturalized settings. Don't worry about planting in locations on the edges of the property, Southern Gentleman is rarely damaged by Deer!
High impact color all season long, Winterberry will provide bold interest as a pruned foundation plant or large anchor for your home's foundation and other planting beds. A stylish, deep-green backdrop of foliage is always welcome to highlight smaller shrubs and perennials.
With the added ability to grow in moist to wet soils, Winterberry is oh so versatile! Use in the low areas of your landscape where water drains, or as an impressive plant at the corner of a building where the downspouts empty. Even tolerating swampy conditions!
#ProPlantTips For Care
Your Southern Gentleman Winterberry needs full sun to part shade for the best color. Incredibly heat-tolerant in growing zones 3 through 9, this shrub also has impressive cold hardiness.
A native to North America, Winterberry typically found in low elevation wooded areas, along ponds and streams, and in damp thickets, and swamps.
Slow and steady growers, without pruning they will get to a sizable 8-10 foot tall and similar spread. Pruning is best done right after Southern Gentleman is finished blooming.
Tolerating wet soils, Southern Gentleman does very well in any well-draining soil and are not too particular on the type. However, the ability to grow in soggy conditions does set this Holly apart from others!
Tolerating dryer sites once established, Holly and all plants benefit generous layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Especially in hotter summer climates.
Deer-resistant, tough shrubs, these won't need too much care or fuss to reap the benefits they provide your landscape.
Give your garden the stately presence that only a Southern Gentleman Winterberry from Nature Hills Nursery can lend to your landscape! Order yours today!
