Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

#ProPlantTips for Care
Skeeter's Broom Japanese Maple prefers a cool, rich, well-drained soil. Ideally, this plant loves morning sunlight with light or filtered shade from the hot afternoon sun - especially in warmer climates.
A 3-4 inch layer of wood chips over the root zone of this plant does an excellent job of maintaining better moisture keeping the soil cooler in summer, and also buffering the cold in winter. Always keep the mulch away from the stems of all plants by a few inches. Wood chips also do an excellent job of finishing the look of your landscape.
This compact plant needs little pruning unless you are trying to change the form of the plant or slightly reduce the size of a stem on occasion. Late winter or early spring is a good time to do any pruning if needed.
An incredible, smaller growing Red Leaved Japanese with lots of character that would highlight any landscape. This one sells out every year.
