Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 7-10
If you had to name the most beloved of the West Coast native plants, an easy shoe-in for the Top 10 list would be Sentinel Manzanita (Arctostaphylos densiflora 'Sentinel')! This beauty is the most floriferous of all the Manzanitas in cultivation and is an absolutely gorgeous garden addition!
This hardy shrub has richly colored maroon-brown stems and gray-green broadleaf evergreen leaves all year and is covered in bursts of nodding bell-shaped flowers in a soft baby pink and white. Those sprays of darling blossoms not only show off dramatically but also attract loads of butterflies!
This is one of the fastest-growing Manzanitas! Most of these shrubs are slow growers, but Sentinel can reach mature size in a few years! Growing into a dense, rounded shrub up to 8 feet in height and width! Deer and rabbit-resistant, these flowering evergreens are also highly water-wise and easy to grow!
Planting and Application:
Sentinel is a stunning hedgerow or a show-stopping specimen depending on how you want to style it! Left rounded and fluffy or sheared and shaped, these evergreens can become wonderful outdoor garden room walls, year-round privacy, and lush backdrops for your garden beds. Create screening and property division in a hurry with these fast-growing evergreens!
Pollinators, butterflies, and Hummingbirds flock to Sentinel for nectar and shelter, so if you want to add more wildlife to your Western garden, then this is a must-have for you! Groupings and rows are wonderful habitats and make filling large areas easy without the worry that deer will munch away at your hedges!
Shear and shape smaller and create a hardy foundation planting that also flowers! Have fun creating high and low landscaping with these shrubs and other Manzanita, including tree form and groundcover forms that won't require much water or care to keep them growing green! Limb up your shrub and expose its lower limbs for a unique tree-form specimen to soften the corner of your home or create a raised berm focal point!
- Pink & White Bell-Shaped Blooms
- Silvery Green Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
- Large-Sized Shrub Or Small Tree With Striking Maroon Bark!
- Tough Water-Wise Native Plant
- Tall Hedges, Windbreaks, Specimens & Focal Points!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Thriving in full sun, heat, and xeric sites, Sentinel Manzanita will handle soils that range from heavy, rich garden loam to beach sand, though it is not very fond of salt spray. Sentinel seems to almost thrive on neglect, so you don't need to baby it! Water enough just to establish then grow with only supplemental moisture during prolonged drought and extreme heat.
Prune or shear your Manzanita after the flowers fade, and you can train these smaller if needed. For hedges, keep the tops narrower than the bottoms to avoid the bottoms being shaded out. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to support your plant's roots and keep weeds at bay all year round!
- Full Sun Shrubs
- Water-Wise & Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Tolerates Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
- Prune or Shear After Flowering
- Deer, & Rabbit Resistant
