A classic with pink and gray - what a combo! Whether you are a Sedum-loving plant collector or new to the Sedum scene, the Matrona Sedum (Sedum 'Matrona') is a must-have in your garden!
Matrona sports thick, upright purple stems, but gray-green succulent leaves with rosy-pink, delicately scalloped edges. The foliage would be striking on its own, but just wait until it blooms! The mauve-pink flowers attract butterflies and bees by the droves and then turn a deep chocolate brown in winter, providing winter interest and food for the birds!
The strong stems and lacy-looking clusters of star-shaped blooms will look fantastic in your bouquets and indoor floral arrangements! Then the dried blooms will add their charm to your dried crafts and décor!
Originating in the mountains in Germany, you know these are hardy garden plants that are sure to put on a great display in your temperate USDA growing zones 3 to 9 American garden! Growing into an upright 18-inch clump when in bloom, these perennial Stonecrop specimens spread to just 12 inches wide when mature!
Planting and Application:
These taller, upright perennials grow into substantially sized clumps of foliage that can even take the place of small shrubs in your landscape! Mixed perennial gardens, Rock Gardens, Cottage borders, and mailbox gardens are perfect for showing off these incredible blooms!
Pot up in planters and container gardens as taller focal point thrillers and fillers anywhere in the sun-drenched porch or patio! These elegant perennials will flaunt themselves around your seating areas and feed pollinators galore!
Add a focal point Matrona with Black Scallop Ajuga or Cauticola Sedum around its base in a pair of upscale black urns and stand them on either side of your sunny front porch for a formal welcome home!
Matrona looks great with other Sedums, of course, but the thick stems and high domes of florets are also perfect foils for strappy Ornamental grasses and low-growing groundcovers! Pair with SunSparkler® Plum Dazzled Sedum, or Steel the Show Stonecrop for a unique effect! These late-season blooms pair well with Rudbeckia and Aster, creating a pollinator garden that feeds bees and butterflies - especially migrating Monarch butterflies!
Once the blooms dry, the seeds are frequently foraged by songbirds before drying and becoming winter interest once the snows begin to fly!
- Large Mauve-Pink Flower Clusters - Full of Star-Shaped Blossoms
- Strong Purple Stems & Gray-Green Succulent Foliage
- Summer Flowers Turn Maroon In Fall
- Persistent Blooms - Bird Food, Winter Interest & Dried Décor
- Vital Nectar Resource For Bees & Butterflies!
- Specimens, Accents, Containers, Thrillers & Bouquets!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This is a low-maintenance plant that is very content to just be! Matrona Stonecrop actually thrives in full sun and poor soil but can do well in pampered garden conditions too. During the first season, give it a medium amount of water on a regular basis. After the fleshy roots are well-established in your soil, you can ease off on the supplemental water. We always recommend that you protect your investment with water in a prolonged drought. Even though Sedum is a water-wise perennial, they do appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch around the root zone to keep more moisture consistency in the soil.
For a clean-looking appearance, prune back the old foliage that died back in the winter, before new growth begins in the early spring. Once you plant it and get it well established, you'll never have to bother with it again, save for when you want to divide it to share with friends or to expand its territory in your own garden.
- Cold-Hardy & Heat-Resistant in Full Sun
- Thrives in Almost Any Well-Drained Soil - Poor Soil Tolerant
- Regular Moisture At First - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Prune Down in Very Early Spring
- Deer Don't Prefer This Gorgeous Plant
The elegant Matrona Sedum is the mother of all Sedums and will certainly please you for many years to come! Don't wait and order yours from Nature Hills today!
