An antique dessert fruit since the 1700s, the Seckel Pear Tree (Pyrus communis 'Seckel') is a fruit-bearing tree that is beloved for its incredible fruit that are so sumptuously sweet that they're sometimes referred to as Sugar pears or Candy pears.
These honeyed beauties begin their lives in early spring when delicate, white blossoms welcome the new season and will ‘wow’ your neighbors with their pristine artistry. The local pollinators too will notice this floral display and hone in on the nectar resources!
As spring turns to summer, adorable little pears form, beginning their development as a vibrant green. The pears soon transform to greenish-golden tones with russet highlights and eventually take on a lovely, scarlet blush by mid-September. Each diminutive fruit is as alluring as it is delicious.
They may be small, but they make up for their stature with incredible flavor. Sweet and luscious, they’re often thought of as a dessert pear. They impart their incredibly sweet flavor with delicate, spicy undertones. The fine-grained flesh is an appealing, creamy white with just a hint of sunny yellow.
How to Use Seckel Pear Tree In The Landscape
Modestly sized, the vibrant green foliage and spring blooms make for an amazing ornamental specimen tree. Suitable for front landscapes as it is in the orchard setting, this is a great focal point anywhere it goes!
Shade seating areas, garden beds or patios, or set outside a window so you’ll always have one in view when you walk by or relax outside! You’ll be able to readily enjoy your spring blossom, cooling shade or keep an eye on your delicious gems as they ripen on the branches.
Ornamental European Pears are often seen in front yards, so a Seckel in your yard will not only provide that popular appeal but grant you a fall treat as well. Seckel is a reliable and productive tree that does best with a pollinator nearby.
Fantastic and sweet as sugar, these are commonly used as dessert pears for all your cooking and baking needs. Create smooth dessert sauces, and amazing preserves, jams and spiced pears! Of course, they’re luscious straight from the tree!
#ProPlantTips For Care

Displaying some drought tolerance, it’s best to protect your investment with regular watering during times of need, when fruiting and during the heat of summer. Young trees especially require consistent moisture until they’re established.
Preferring rich, loamy, well-drained soil, provide a good layer of mulch over your root system for better moisture consistency and insulation from heat and cold.
Prune to keep an open canopy so that both sunlight and airflow reach the interior. Head over to our Garden Blog for more Fruit Tree Planting, Fruit Tree Pruning and Fruit Tree Care tips and tricks can be found!
