The Scotch Pine Tree (Pinus sylvestris) is probably one of the best-known and loved trees in the world! Even if you've never grown this tree in your yard, you've probably had it in your home. This evergreen is the classic Christmas Tree! The long blue-green needles are held in pairs and these Trees feature scaled reddish-brown bark with flakey orange bark higher up in the canopy.

Also known as Scots Pine, not only is this a prominent tree, but it is also an American native tree that birds and wildlife seek out for food and shelter! The pyramid form and gray-green color complement any landscape. This is one of the most easy-going of all evergreens.

The Scotch Pine tolerates any soil and especially loves sandy or clay soils. It doesn't shudder at the cold and even thrives in Siberia, where the ground never thaws completely, so you know that it will do well with your winter weather. Found growing natively throughout USDA hardiness zones 3 to 7, these trees can reach 60-70 feet in height and about half that in width.

Planting and Application:

Scotch Pine will anchor your border or foundation planting or soften the edges of your garage. Plant one in the front yard for an easy-care wildlife tree and ornamental egg-shaped pinecones each fall! And come Christmas time, well, it is truly unbeatable for that classic Christmas tree look, right? Those strong limbs will hold all your outdoor holiday decor without drooping.

Magnificent windbreaks, privacy when mixed into mixed screening borders, and luxurious shelterbelts for birds and wildlife. Block prevailing winds that can lead to drifting snow while adding shade year-round to your home and garden with a stand of Scots Pine.

  • Long Green Needles Held in Pairs
  • Classic Christmas Tree Shape!
  • Fast Growing With Twisting Trunks
  • Orange & Reddish Brown Flaked Bark
  • Great Screens, Specimens, Wildlife Habitat & Windbreaks

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Drought, poor soil, cold and neglect tolerant? About the only thing that will set the Scotch Pine back is too much shade! This variety of Pine needs a good amount of sun during the day to perform at its best. It is a hardy tree that grows rapidly for a Pine tree and tolerates prolonged drought once established. If you need to encourage a denser canopy or want to reduce size, candle pruning in the spring is the best method.

Every three years, you will notice the Scots Pine developing some yellow interior needles that will drop in the fall. This is completely normal as the tree will regrow new fresh growth. Keep this free Pine Mulch or Pine Straw under your tree for a layer of protection from cold and moisture loss, or rake it up to use elsewhere in your garden!
