Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 9-11
Add mystery and drama - and Hummingbirds! The Black and Blue Salva (Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue'), also known as Meadow Sage and Perennial Sage, is a tall and attractive plant that has an upright growth habit full of aromatic green foliage.
The bi-colored blooms are 3/4 of an inch in size and occur in both spring and well into the autumn. This selection of the Hardy Anise Sage differs from the norm in that the calyx (the little cup that holds the open flower) is black instead of the usual green!
The summer til autumn flowering, dark, denim-blue flower spikes have black bases! They appear to have been made by an artist because of their striking beauty! The bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds will agree and arrive to admire the tubular blooms and sip nectar! Even Hummingbird Moths (Sphinx Moth) and other beneficial insects will show up too!
Growing 2 feet tall in bloom and up to 2 feet wide, these herbaceous perennial flowers are hardy throughout USDA planting zones 9 to 11, but are wonderful annual accents that grow fast to near full size throughout USDA zones 3 to 8! Deer and rabbits even leave them alone, seldom even having a nibble due to the aromatic foliage!
Planting and Application:
Mix Black and Blue Sage l with other beautiful summer flowering sun-perennials, especially white, bright yellow, and red blooms, and any plant with dark foliage and dark blooms. The green foliage is aromatic when brushed and offsets the dark stems and blooms!
This eye-catching Salvia offers abundant deep-blue, tubular blooms that are an absolute favorite of hummingbirds and feed them all growing season, reblooming until frost. Support your feathered friends by planting groupings and drifts that are low-maintenance, fast-growing, and easy to grow!
Black and Blue is indispensable for your sun garden or containers if you want pretty, bright, flowers to enjoy in the garden and floral arrangements! Tuck into your Container gardens, Cottage Gardens, dark foliage gardens, and Rock Gardens, and are widely adaptable in everything from Xeric to pampered landscapes!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Grow Perennial Salvia in full sun and well-drained soil for the strongest and showiest display and the most blooms. Adding Nature Hills Root Booster during planting, spring applications of fertilizer, and adding a 3-4 inches of arborist mulch over the soil help hold back the weeds, hold in moisture, and insulate the roots from heat and chill.
Deadhead the blooms as they fade to encourage rebloom until frost, and prune back your entire mound in the very early spring. Salvia are clumping perennials that appreciate being divided every 3-5 years to maintain their vigor. In cooler climates, these plants are fast-growing annuals and grow fast in the sun.
- Full Sun Perennials
- Well-Drained Soils
- Moderate Moisture to Low Moisture Needs - Drought Tolerant Once Established
- Hardy Perennial Zone 9-11, Annual Accents 3-8
- Deadhead For Return Blooms & Prune Early Spring
- Rabbit & Deer-Resistant
