A low-maintenance garden favorite! If you like lavender, then you're going to love Russian Sage (Salvia yangii). This ornamental perennial is often mistaken for lavender, and while closely related, is a different type of plant altogether!

Growers of Russian Sage know that the beauty to behold is not the whole story of this perennial. It's also a treat for the senses with its aromatic fragrance derived from its membership in the Mint family. It was formerly known by the botanical name Perovskia atriplicifolia, those who love Russian Sage Plants remark on its hardy nature and ease of maintenance!

The strong, upright stems of Russian Sage are dotted with textured silver-grey leaves and tiny clusters of lavender blossoms on tall, airy spires. From a distance, the view of the Russian Sage takes on the appearance of a hazy bluish fog that shifts with every movement of the breeze each summer and creates this same striking visual all summer and well into the fall!

Planting and Application:

Plant this gorgeous specimen in a perennial bed, let it grace the border of a garden walkway, or put it to use around a patio to give your outdoor entertaining space a bold burst of beautiful lavender color. Anywhere you have a hot, dry, sunny location will suit this plant just fine! It's no wonder that it is a go-to perennial for commercial sites!

The airy blue blooms add a mist-like texture to sunny and xeric locations and even great for fire-wise landscaping defensive plans! Tuck into the back borders of your Rock Garden beds, on steep sunny slopes, or an ethereal quality to Cottage gardens!

Plant in your pollinator borders and bring in the butterflies with these aromatic plants! Any mixed shrub or border garden gains lacy blue finery, especially when planted in groupings that repeat throughout shrubs and perennials of different textures. You'll love having this filler in the landscape, as well as your cut flower bouquets indoors!

Mixing beautifully with other lavenders, blues, purples, and whites, Russian Sage also complements pinks and near-black flowering or dark foliage plants! Mix with other sunny perennials and of course, the many types of other Russian Sage! Set yours off by planting it against dark evergreen hedges or the foundation of a home with dark siding!

  • Airy Mist-Like Lavender-Blue Spires
  • Flowers All Summer Till Fall
  • Great Cut Flower Bouquet Filler
  • Butterfly & Bee-Friendly Plant

#ProPlantTips for Care:

A durable, vigorous grower, Russian Sage plants scoff at heat, drought, and pests throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 8, while still maintaining a fresh appearance. Russian Sage is a full-sun easy-to-grow perennial you can plant and forget, counting on its outstanding performance year after year, no matter the challenges or conditions. For best results, plant in a well-drained site with regular moisture access at first, but once established, and will become highly drought tolerant!

A simple pruning after the emergence of new spring growth, cutting back the old stems to reveal the lower set of leaves helps it maintain its vitality and beauty. Deadhead spent flowering spires to encourage branching and fresh blooms through fall. Every 3-5 years, divide Russian Sage to prevent overcrowding.

  • Full Sun

  • Moderate Moisture - Low/Water-Wise Once Established
