Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements

#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant your Royal Ann in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Please give Cherry trees well-drained soil and good air circulation, too.
Choose a planting site that gets morning sun, if you can. The drying power of the morning sun quickly dries the foliage of morning dew to keep your plants healthy.
Allow your fruiting trees to grow to their full height and spread, if you have the room. Plant 12 feet apart from pollination partners.
Or, you can choose to prune fruit trees to keep them under 10 feet tall. Plan to prune your trees each summer for size control. Decide on the height and spread you want, and tip prune to keep them at that size.
Trees that are summer pruned can be grown 5 feet apart on center. Measure from trunk to trunk. Watch our YouTube channel for more information on proven backyard orchard culture techniques. Order the beloved Royal Ann Cherry tree from Nature Hills today!
Royal Ann Cherry Tree Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for Royal Ann Cherry Trees to bear fruit?
Nature Hills Nursery sells fruit trees with mature root systems, and will often set fruit in their second or third years.
How Fast Do Royal Ann Cherry Trees Grow?
Cherry trees are medium growth rate plants and once they are established they can add 12-18 inches per year or so if given the ideal growing conditions.
Where do Royal Ann Cherry Trees Grow Best?
Cherry trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soil in at least 6 hours of full sun per day or more. Morning sun is a plus and planting any fruit tree where there is good air circulation keeps the plants stress-free.
Do You Need 2 Cherry Trees to Produce Fruit?
All Prunus varieties have different requirements to set fruit. Royal Ann is not self-fruiting and needs a pollinating partner. Pair with one of these varieties:
- Sam Cherry Tree
- Van Cherry Tree
- Stella Cherry Tree & Compact Stella
- Rainier Cherry Tree
- Montmorency Cherry Tree
- Bing Cherry Tree
No room? Look into High-Density Planting techniques, or choose a semi-dwarf or dwarf fruit tree.
When Should Royal Ann Cherry Trees be Planted?
Bareroot cherry trees are best planted in the spring but container-grown cherry trees can be successfully transplanted all throughout the growing season as long as the ground isn't frozen and they are carefully watered as needed. Check for the first and last frost dates for your area with your local County Extension Office.
