The pretty native Roughleaf Dogwood shrub (Cornus drummondii) is also known as Rough-leaved Dogwood and widely regarded for its textured green foliage, star-shaped blooms, and ornamental white berries for three seasons of beauty within the landscape! You can choose if your ornamental becomes a shrub or multi-stemmed tree with training!

Flowering in May-June, the yellowish-white clusters of flowers are borne in dense clusters and are comprised of tiny flowers! These pretty blooms provide nectar for pollinators and beneficial insects in addition to accenting your landscape beautifully!

Fall explodes with great fall color and ornamental white fruit clusters. Migrating birds will make a pit stop to feast on the fruit and you'll love using the berry-laden branches in fall décor! Once winter arrives, you'll be treated to the textured gray-brown bark with shallow grooves and plates, while revealing the canopy.

Planting and Application:

Roughleaf Dogwood are beautiful accents to plant around decks, patios, and foundation plantings. Pull up a lawn chair or garden bench to enjoy the pollinators and songbirds fluttering among these native shrubs' branches!

Plant where the gutters drain to create a Rain Garden that slows water and filters runoff. These shrubs colonize by suckers when allowed, thriving in their native environments throughout moist woodlands, and along streams and ponds. Let form thickets for naturalizing areas or as erosion control.

Growing 8 to 15 feet in height and width, hedges and mixed shrub borders. Creating easy-care habitat and birds cover, use as shelterbelts, screening, or windbreaks that also bump up the curb appeal!

  • Wildlife Cover, Nesting & Protection

Bigger Than Advertised

I ordered 3 Roughlead Dogwoods, which very few nurseries carry, for a shady spot. The shrubs arrived in good shape in 3 separate large boxes. Advertised as 1-2 feet tall, all of the shrubs are over 3 feet tall. As I planted them in early August, which is perhaps not ideal. they look a little stressed, but I expect them to come back strong next Spring and eventually screen our view of the neighbor's backyard.

Hi Don and Val,
Thank you for the review! We are happy to hear the Roughleaf Dogwoods arrived in great shape and bigger than expected. While it is normal for newly planted trees to experience some transplant shock, here are some tips and suggestions to help them along the way:

• Watering: Deep soak 2–3 times per week for the first three weeks (3–5 gallons each), then once weekly; twice in hot/windy spells. Give a final deep watering just before the ground freezes.
• Mulch: Clear grass in a 3-foot circle and add 2–3 inches of mulch, kept a few inches off the stems.
• Shade: If afternoons are scorching, provide temporary shade (burlap or shade cloth on the west side) for a week or two.
• No fertilizer now.
• Winter prep: Keep mulch, protect trunks from rabbits/voles, and consider a breathable trunk wrap in very exposed spots (December–March).
