If you are looking for tropical impact and appreciate an easy-care shrub, you'll love Red Heart Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus 'Red Heart'). This shrub draws you in and brightens your landscape with an easy elegance that doesn't take itself too seriously.

You'll love the form of this plant. Its got an upright growing habit and develops into a graceful vase shape with time. Pleasingly large, single, saucer-shaped flowers of pure white with a scarlet center bloom from July until frost. This will delight every Hummingbird, bee, and butterfly who will arrive to sip the much-needed nectar and collect pollen!

Unlike other Hibiscus varieties that put on a show and then retire for the season, rely on the carefree Rose of Sharon shrub for luxurious white and red blooms that just keep coming! Also known as Althea, and related to Tropical and Hardy Hibiscus, it's a perfect plant to add flower power, just as most other flowering shrubs are finishing up for the season.

That's a plant to love! But it's not all!

Their lush, healthy, dark green foliage. It makes a perfect foil for the lush, large blooms with their wide petals and sophisticated color. Althea are lovely, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrubs that carry an air of stately, sculptural presence while managing to look relaxed and informal while doing it! This xeriscape plant won't require much water once established. It's a vigorous and versatile deciduous shrub that can be used in many ways in the landscape!

Planting and Application:

Plant several together in a zig-zag to create a wide visual barrier, or plant one by itself as a group on the lawn. Use one as a foundation plant at the corner of your front yard landscape to instantly ground your house without any hassle, muss, or fuss.

Or plant an allée behind your seating area for a welcoming privacy screen, or run a long hedge of these hard-working beauties along your property line. Creating a very friendly fence to share with your neighborhood! Red Heart Hibiscus can also be used as a fast-growing hedge or screen along the edge of a property or along a patio.

Use a single specimen to decorate the background of your planting beds as mighty accents and focal points! Place several in loose groupings to anchor a low-maintenance shrub border. It will look fabulous near a brick patio, or stamped decorative concrete. Creating 'garden rooms' with flowering walls. Make your landscape live large with designated entertainment areas!

Pick up on the scarlet red flower center with smaller red-flowering shrubs such as Red Prince Weigela, or Grateful Red Hydrangea, or pair Red Heart with fun seasonal plants like Crocosmia, Canna, or Elephant Ear bulbs.

  • Gorgeous White Blooms with Ruby-Red Centers
  • Long-Lasting Display Mid-Summer Through Fall
  • Butterflies, Bees & Hummingbirds Love the Nectar-Rich Blooms
  • Upright, Rounded Form & Pretty Branching Structure
  • Easy to Grow & Great for New Gardeners

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Red Heart is easy to grow and has no serious insect or disease problems. Althea is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions and tolerant of full sun all day! Rose of Sharon does need well-drained soil but is not particular on the type and even doing well in poor soils. If drainage is an issue, add extra dirt in a raised bed if you need to improve drainage. Give them a regular schedule of medium water, especially when they are young plants. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.

Add a thick layer of arborist mulch in containers and in-ground plants alike. You'll cut down on surface evaporation with this useful garden must-have, plus provide much-needed insulation from heat and cold. Deadhead your shrub after flowers fade to remove seedheads before they mature to prevent self-seeding. Annually pruning in late winter or early spring will result in increased shoot vigor and larger flowers. Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture & Enriched Well-Drained Soil
  • Adaptable to a Wide Range of Conditions & Poor Soil
  • Tolerates Cold, Heat, Humidity & Salt Spray

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
