Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

How to Use Riverside™ Arborvitae in the Landscape
Yes, you can rely on Riverside™ to provide a very welcome sense of privacy. But why not consider carving out some space for you, your family, and friends to enjoy in your backyard? Riverside would be the perfect tree to use as “green walls” of a special Garden Room.
Create an elegant outdoor dining space, or carve out some “me time” with a Meditation Room or outdoor yoga studio. Shield your kids’ playset from the afternoon sun. Or, make a Memory Garden with an exterior bench and special statuary. March a row down the east or north side of your pool deck.
Riverside™ suits many different styles, from rustic to contemporary to Zen. Pair it with Viburnum or Chokeberry Aronia shrubs, Ornamental Grasses of all heights and widths, or keep it easy with Landscape Rose shrubs planted on the sunny side.
This tree is interesting enough to make a striking, single-specimen plant. Use at the corner of your modern foundation planting to anchor the design.
Incorporate Riverside™ into your shelterbelts and windbreaks. Add Birch trees and Lilac shrubs on the sunny side. You’ll set a beautiful stage with excellent color and gain that all-important biodiversity on your property.
For a solid screen, plant them 2 feet on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Loosen up that spacing to 3 feet on center, if you want a more natural look.
Need a fast screen? Try an old farmer’s trick. Use a double, zigzagging, staggered row along the length of the fence, or driveway. Riverside™ stays slender, so it will easily fit in side yards, as well.
Who says hedges have to be straight? Try a curved, or serpentine line to suit a casual lifestyle. Use a winding row along the back of your perennial border as a marvelous, easy-care, evergreen backdrop. You’ll definitely appreciate the added winter interest of this focal point.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant them in full sun or partial shade. They’ll need at least 4 hours of direct sunlight every day.
Keep the soil surrounding your new Riverside Arborvitae evenly moist, as they establish their root system in your landscape. Mulch works well to keep the roots cool and moist, so add a 3-inch layer around the roots. Pull mulch back from the base of the trunk by several inches.
They do prefer a good moisture level to maintain even growth. When it gets dry, drop the hose beneath it and let it soak the surrounding area.
Enjoy these handsome, and oh-so-useful evergreen trees in your yard this season. Order the impressive Riverside™ Arborvitae from the expert growers at Nature Hills today!
