Great Jupiter's Beard!
Red Valerian, Centranthus ruber 'Coccineus', has fragrant, 1/2-inch scarlet to red flowers that grow in dense clusters on 2 to 3 foot stems; complemented by the fleshy, blue-green leaves. It is also called Jupiter's Beard.
If old flowering stems are removed, it begins blooming in spring and continues over a long period. Plant Red Valerian in full sun in well drained soil. It tolerates poor soils and short drought conditions well.
'Red Valerian' re-seeds freely and to prevent spreading or overcrowding, deadhead plants after flowering. This plant is best when massed and is often naturalized along old walls and rock outcrops.
If you are looking for long lasting flower arrangements, 'Red Valerian' makes a long-lasting beautiful cut flower. It is also a good plant to supply butterflies with nectar so expect them to visit often!
