Red Poppy (Papaver 'Red'), also known as the Common Poppy, are the classic vivid wildflower plants that bees adore! The radiant red-saturated crepe-paper petals are born on slender stems and burst out from hairy-looking buds.

Backed by a small rosette of lobed, green leaves that look great all spring into the summer. Deadheading, or snipping blooms for bouquets, means encouraging new buds to appear. Soon by mid-late summer, you'll enjoy the unique seedpods that form and can be collected for crafts! The seeds even sound like rattles once they've dried, adding sound to your landscapes.

Red Poppy plants are cold-hardy perennials in USDA growing zones 3-8. Growing 18-24 inches tall when in bloom, the mounds of foliage grow 12-18 inches wide. The symbol used to remember those who had given their lives in World War One because Poppies are the flowers that grew on the battlefields after World War One ended.

Planting and Application:

Red Poppy plants do well in garden beds and borders, cutting gardens, pollinator borders and in containers for delicate blossoms indoors or out! The cheerful color collection goes great with a wide variety of other perennial blooms all spring and into summer.

Poppies attract loads of butterflies and bees, and their blooms look incredible in a floral bouquet! Add delicate blooms and dense foliage looks great along paths and garden edges as spillers for a clean tidy edge all growing season. Plant in large containers and planters anywhere in the sun!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Poppy plants love full sun and can handle partial sun and afternoon shade, especially in the warmer of its favored growing zones. Preferring well-drained moist to slightly drier soils without being picky on soil type. Provide a layer of Arborist mulch to hold in moisture and keep roots cool. You can deadhead to keep the seeds from self-seeding and clean up the mound.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Deadhead After Blooms Fade & Prune Early Spring
