Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Redpointe® Red Maples perform best in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. While they tolerate light shade, full sun exposure is the key to achieving that brilliant, consistent fire-red autumn color and maintaining a tight, symmetrical canopy.
  • Soil: This cultivar is prized for its ability to handle slightly alkaline or heavy clay soils better than other maples, but it prefers moist, well-drained conditions. If you have heavy clay, plant the root ball slightly high—about two inches above the soil line—to prevent the roots from suffocating in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide ten gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter every week to help the roots establish deep into the soil. Once mature, Redpointe® is notably heat-tolerant, but it still requires supplemental deep soaking during dry summer spells to prevent leaf scorch and ensure the tree has the energy to produce vibrant fall foliage. If watering is inconsistent, you may see premature leaf drop or "crispy" leaf edges, which is the tree's way of trying to conserve moisture.

Pruning Tips

This tree is naturally well-behaved with a strong central leader, so it requires very little structural pruning. If you need to shape it or remove lower branches for clearance, do so in late winter while the tree is still dormant to minimize "bleeding" or sap flow. Think of pruning like a strategic haircut; by removing crossing branches early, you improve airflow and light penetration, which keeps the inner foliage healthy and prevents disease.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release "tree and shrub" fertilizer in early spring just as the buds begin to swell. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first freeze. This late-season growth is highly susceptible to winter kill, which can damage the overall structure of your tree.
