In the 1930's the mighty Red Pine was planted all across the Northern part of the U.S. and into Canada. It was prized then, like it is now, for its tall and super-straight trunks! Every telephone pole you see from New York to Seattle is made from Red Pine, just like they have been since the 30's!

So, if you're looking for a tall, straight, majestic tree that thrives in the North, the Red Pine Tree (Pinus resinosa) is the answer. Living for up to 300 years, this evergreen tree grows strong, survives harsh weather and is easy to care for. The reddish bark and pale red heartwood earned this tree its name!

Young trees often keep their branches all the way to the ground and form a conical profile. Mature trees have a rounded and picturesque canopy, with strong horizontal branching. The leaves are arranged in pairs and can be 4 - 6 inches long and dark green, soft, and flexible.

Also called the Norway Pine, the Red Pine stands up to wind and snow like a champ. It self-prunes, so it drops dead branches as it grows. This means that it has a nice clean trunk as it grows older without excessive pruning needed on your part. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 7, these trees can grow nearly 70 feet in height and spread 25 feet wide.

Planting and Application:

Mighty specimens, and wonderful for naturalized groupings, these are superb lawn and shade trees! You'll see one of these mature trees from afar and every songbird, squirrel, and other forms of wildlife will see them too! The strong limbs readily shelter them and give them a safe haven to roost and forage in. The smaller cones are fantastic for feeding wildlife too!

Red Pines are perfect trees for windbreaks on large properties or for a year-round green in hard winter places. Slow noise and block drifting snow as well as create privacy while these trees are young. Plus you'll enjoy their presence through sun, heat, snow, and cold!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

All Red Pines need is a sunny spot and well-drained soil and they are good to go! Even thriving in most soils including very sandy soils and sites with very little topsoil. Once established, the Red Pine is very drought-resistant. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the entire root system. Water new trees regularly but back off after their first year, and deep winter watering in colder climates. Candle prune in the spring to keep young trees growing denser and more compact.

  • Easy Care & Hardy To Zone 3
  • Full Sun Trees
  • Highly Adaptable In Well-Drained Soil & Moderate Moisture
  • Prune by Candling in Spring
  • Wildlife Friendly Trees
