Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

When you know Onions, you spell flavor "R-e-d K-a-r-m-e-n". Red Karmen Onions (Allium cepa 'Red Karmen') make some of the best slicing-Onion for burgers, salads, sandwiches, and pizza. They have a perfectly balanced sweetness with only a hint of spice and unbelievable crunch. And, of course, Red Karmens add a pop of red-violet to any dish in need of color!

You can expect your Red Karmen Onions to be even in size and ripen in about 80 days after planting. This Onion will develop into plump globes and are slightly ovular and will be ready to harvest in late spring or summer depending upon when you planted them. This vigorous grower can also be used as scallions before they're fully ready to harvest.

These deep-red Onions store well because of their thick outer skin and show superior resistance to downy mildew! These long-day Red Onions are fantastic for cooler northern climate gardens and are ideal throughout all of the USDA growing zones 1 to 11. Need to find your hardiness zone? Use our map to locate yours!

Landscape Application:

The Onion tops will grow quickly in the cool weather and the bulbs will develop below ground. If you planted them too close together, you can simply pull out any that are too close and use them as Green Onions or Spring Onions and leave the ones spaced out better to develop large bulbs.

Whether you've been gardening for decades or you're just beginning, grow these easy-to-grow vegetables in rows throughout your Vegetable and Kitchen Gardens. Or in smaller gardens can grow these space-saving vegetables in containers on a balcony or in raised beds if you have poor drainage or no garden room.

  • Ideal Red Onion
  • Beautiful Purple Flesh
  • Well-Balanced Sweet & Spicy
  • 80 Days to Maturity
  • Great In Garden Beds, Raised Beds & Containers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

These easy-to-grow Onions are a favorite for beginner gardeners and experts alike. Plant them early in the cool spring weather, as soon as your soil can be worked. They thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained soil. Simply till or fluff your soil then plant your onions a few inches apart. Water them regularly and as needed to keep the plants stress-free

It is best to wait to harvest the large Onions until their foliage browns. Once their tops wilt and turn brown, it's time to harvest your sweet, stunning onions. Locate the Onions beneath the dried foliage, then gently pry them out with a spade or spading fork.

You can let them sit on top of the soil in the sun for a few days to help dry the roots down before tying the tops together in bunches and hanging them to dry in your garage to hand for a while. Then store until you're ready to eat them.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Regular Moisture
  • Harvest When Tops Yellow/Brown
  • Long Day Onion Type

Reserve a space in your veggie garden for your own Red Karmen Onions. These crisp but juicy Onions will add some zest to your spring and flavor to your favorite dishes. Don't wait to order. These bright and bold onions are guaranteed to sell out from the Nature Hills website!
