Bold spires of deep red, Red Hollyhocks (Alcea 'Red') have gorgeous silky petals in saturated color! These biennials start as rosettes of fan-shaped, ruffled green leaves, and then the following year sends up a tall 4-8 foot spire of radiant Hibiscus-esque blooms! These satiny petals bloom along sturdy stems and bloom from the bottom up for a long-lasting display!

Those mounds of foliage grow 24-36 inches wide, and look great from spring til frost! In addition to the amazing array of beneficial pollinators and beneficial insects that drop by these blooms, the leaves support the lifecycle of painted lady Butterflies as a host plant for their caterpillars!

Red Hollyhocks are very cold-hardy biennials throughout USDA growing zones 2 through 8. While short-lived, they form sprouts from the roots, and the seeds of some varieties come back year after year!

Planting and Application:

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Biennial Hollyhocks need full sun to grow best. Plant in a well-drained location that is protected due to its height. They may need to be protected from wind and heavy rain, so provide support from stakes, against a fence or wall for protection. Hollyhocks may self-seed, so deadhead right after blooms fade. Clean mounds in late fall after the frost kills back the foliage.
