Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the sweetest and most abundant fruit, site your Caroline Raspberry where it receives a minimum of six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. While partial shade is acceptable, be aware that less sun will significantly decrease your overall berry production.
  • Soil: Raspberries thrive in rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0-6.5). If you have heavy clay, amend the area generously with aged compost and shredded leaves to improve aeration and prevent root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first year of establishment, provide deep watering (about one inch per week) to ensure the root system is fully developed. Once established, water deeply only when necessary, especially as berries begin to ripen or during periods of drought. Inconsistent moisture during fruiting will stress the plant and result in berries that are small, crumbly, and low quality.

Pruning Tips

The Caroline is a fall-bearing, or primocane, variety, meaning it produces fruit on the new canes that grew this season. For the easiest and most productive system, simply cut every cane down to the ground in late winter or early spring before buds break. This technique maximizes the fall harvest, yielding a large, concentrated crop without the need to distinguish between old and new wood.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 blend, in early spring as new growth begins. Raspberries are moderate feeders, and a single application should be sufficient for the year. What to avoid: Do not apply high-nitrogen fertilizer after mid-summer, as it encourages soft, late-season growth that will be highly susceptible to winter damage.

Exceptional everbearing Caroline Red Raspberry (Rubus idaeus 'Caroline') produces plenty of flavorful, large, conic berries to eat fresh or freeze for later. You'll love the feeling of being prepared...turn your harvest into jams, preserves, pies, cobblers and sauce. If you adore the rich, full flavor of raspberries, you've got to grow your own. No store-bought berry can hold a candle to those grown in your own soil and sunlight.

Spring starts with a flush of cheerful white blossoms that the bees and butterflies go nuts for! Then you'll enjoy watching the red fruits forming. Productive Caroline Red Raspberry plants are literally laden with fruit twice each year. The first crop in June is borne on last year's growth, the second in early fall from this year's growth.

The further south you live, the earlier your fall harvest will be. It ripens earlier than Heritage Raspberry and features a marvelously pronounced Raspberry taste. The textural leaves look gorgeous and add beautiful greenery all growing season long!

Planting and Application:

Raspberries have become increasingly popular for their nutritional and antioxidant properties. They are a rich source of vitamin C as well as being high in manganese and dietary fiber. Eat them for both taste and health...and grow Caroline for one of the best varieties available for your home.

Include these delectable treats in your kitchen garden or add a few rows in the veggie garden. These days, more people are including edible plants like Caroline Red Raspberry plants as a pretty backdrop in your perennial garden. The thorns are great deterrents, so feel free to use these as fruiting hedges and privacy fencing that you and the birds, and even those nosy neighbors can enjoy!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Displaying great disease resistance, the Caroline Red Raspberry is a hardy and adaptable variety that fends off root rot and yellow rust. It's self-fertile and can be grown across most of the United States. Grow Raspberry plants in full sun and well-drained soils with handfuls of organic matter. After the early summer crop is done being harvested, prune those spent fruiting canes out to the ground. Leave the young new canes to fruit a heavy crop in fall on the cane tips.

  • Full Sun
  • Everbearing - Prune Old Canes Off in Early Summer
  • Widely Adaptable Well-Drained Soil
  • Great Disease Resistance
