Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best fruit production. While they can handle some light afternoon shade in hot climates, less sun generally leads to fewer berries and a less intense flavor.
  • Soil: These strawberries thrive in rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5. If you have heavy clay, mix in several inches of compost and plant in raised mounds to prevent water from pooling around the roots.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, keep the soil consistently moist to help the shallow root system get established. Mature Quinault plants typically need about 1 inch of water per week, though you should increase this during the peak of summer heat or when the fruit is swelling. If the soil dries out too much, you will see smaller, "seedy" berries and a decrease in the fall harvest.

Pruning Tips

Strawberries technically grow on new stems emerging from the crown, so pruning is more about "cleaning up" than shaping. In early spring, rake away old, dead foliage to improve air circulation and make room for fresh growth. During the first year, pinch off any early blossoms to force the plant to put its energy into building a strong root system rather than making fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Quinault needs full sun to do its best and prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Add compost or other organic matter to heavy clay or sandy soil before planting. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season to have the juiciest berries. Add mulch to reduce water evaporation. Soil pH should be between 5.5 and 6.8. Rake through or prune back your Strawberry patch in the early spring to clean out the old leaves. Trim away the runners during the first year, but rooted runners in the following years can be transplanted elsewhere.
