Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Not your typical Squill! The fancy clustered blooms of the Portuguese Squill (Scilla peruviana) take the Siberian Squill and transform them into round tightly packed, compact spires of bright lavender-blue stars!
Forming a rosette of strap-like green leaves from which large 3-4 inch flower heads grow. Lavender-blue star-shaped florets are packed tightly into a cluster, and bloom from late spring into early summer, generally lasting for 3 weeks of bloom as the flowers open from the outside to the center!
Fringed in long, strappy leaves, similar to a Hyacinth, Portuguese Squill grows about 12-20 inches tall. Also known as a Cuban Lily, these spring-flowering perennial bulbs can be easily grown as perennial accents in USDA planting zones 7-10, but are wonderful fast-growing annual accents for your pots and planters!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Scilla peruviana should be grown in well-drained, relatively lean soil that has a sandy texture for extra drainage. Best in full sun that produces the most flowers, these Squill plants will also do well in partial shade. Water well during flowering but let the soil dry out after the flowers fade during the summer and autumn.
Plant these bulbs so the pointed tips are slightly above the soil. In very hot climates that frequently have drought-like conditions, provide a light 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the soil. Trim back the flowers once they have died back, and remove the foliage from the area once it yellows. In the coldest growing zones, it is recommended you plant your Portuguese Squill bulbs in containers with excellent drainage.
These plants can cause an allergic reaction so handle the bulbs and above-ground parts with gloves.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Very Well-Drained Lean Soil
- Moderate Moisture During Flowering & Low Moisture Otherwise
- Deadhead After Flowering & Remove Foliage After It Yellows
- Deer & Rodent Resistant
