The original form was loved by all and the Phantom Panicle Hydrangea Tree (Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom') is no different. The charm of this tree not only comes from its unique form but also from its beautiful color-changing panicles. You'll definitely want to add one or more of these to your garden!

Just like the original Phantom Panicle Hydrangea, the tree form has immense blossoms made up of classic Hydrangea florets. When this deciduous specimen first blooms in the summer, the petals are a soft shade of green and will soon fade to an ethereal white before blushing pink later in the season. It'll continue to be showy all through winter with the bloom turning a light shade of tan. The effect is stunning on top of the lush green foliage that peeks out from underneath.

One thing is for sure, you'll never be bored with this tree-form Hydrangea! Not only are the Phantom Panicle Hydrangea Tree's blooms beautiful, but they are absolutely gigantic. These panicles often reach 15-18 inches long! It's no wonder this tree was given the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society!

Planting and Application:

The Phantom is a fantastic way to add a lot of texture to a garden, as it has the wonderful look of an ornamental shrub atop a bare trunk. Use it as a centerpiece to your cottage garden or as an accent along the sides of your patio. This specimen also makes for a stunning spectacle when mass planted in larger gardens!

Soften the corners of hardscapes or anchor a garden bed with this delightfully large tree-form Panicle Hydrangea! Plant one as an accent right in the front of your home on a raised berm to further highlight these wonderful trees, or include these as part of a mixed shrub border to add height and interest.

  • Tall Green to White Blossoms Blush Pink
  • Immense Color Changing Panicles
  • Reliable Flowering & Color
  • Easy-to-Grow & Maintain
  • Specimen, Focal Point, Cut Flower & Accent

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Panicle Hydrangea specimen is the happiest when planted in well-draining soil where it can bask in the sun for most of the day. As long as it is watered regularly, the Phantom Panicle Hydrangea tree will give you those stunning blooms that you can cut and take inside for decorating or drying. Appreciating afternoon shade in the hottest of its USDA growing zones 4 through 8 and a 3-4 inch layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist.

Unlike some other Hydrangea varieties, you won't have to worry about fussing with the soil composition in order to get the color you want. No matter the soil acidity, the Phantom Panicle will consistently start green, turn white, and then end a lovely light pink. In fact, the only upkeep this tree requires is a slight pruning during the winter season!

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moderate Moisture
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Blooms on New Wood - Prune Late Winter/Early Spring
  • Not pH-Dependent Color

It's hard to believe anything can top the Tree-form of the classic Phantom Panicle Hydrangea let alone live up to the highly set expectations, but that is exactly what it does! You'll love it in your garden and your neighbors will be asking how they can get one in theirs. Order a Phantom Panicle Panicle Hydrangea Tree from NatureHills.com today!

Time will tell

I purchased 2 of these from Nature Hills. They came well packed in the box. One of them had a couple of damaged branches probably caused from shipping. The other was full and beautifully green. I planted both of them right away in April. They were a good size to begin with but haven't grown much yet. I planted them with Espoma Bio-tone to start them off. This is my first experience with this type of hydrangea. So, I'm not sure yet as to whether they are progressing along as normal but time will tell. At least, they haven't died. So, I'm hopeful that next year they will push more growth. I'll update this review in the future.

Hello Louise,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful feedback with us! We’re delighted to hear your new hydrangeas arrived well packed and that one is already showing its beautiful lush greenery. We understand that a few damaged branches can be disappointing, but it’s great that both plants have taken nicely to their new home and that you’re keeping a hopeful eye on their progress.

Since this is your first experience with this type of hydrangea, your approach—planting quickly and using Espoma Bio-tone—is definitely an excellent start. Hydrangeas can be a bit slow to show substantial above-ground growth as they focus on establishing healthy roots, especially in their first season. Ensuring they get consistent moisture and maybe some morning sun with partial afternoon shade can also encourage stronger development.

In the meantime, you might find our Hydrangea Care Guide helpful, which offers tips tailored to various hydrangea types and local conditions. If you ever notice any unusual leaf spotting, wilting, or pests, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to assist.

Thanks again for taking the time to update your experience later; we appreciate gardeners like you who chronicle their plant journeys!

Hi Louise,

Thank you so much for sharing your honest and thoughtful feedback! We’re glad to hear that your hydrangeas arrived well-packed and that one is already thriving. We understand how disappointing it can be to spot a few damaged branches—it sometimes happens during shipping despite our best efforts, but thankfully, pruning those carefully should help your plant focus on healthy new growth.

It’s great to hear you took the step of adding Espoma Bio-tone to give your plants a good start. Hydrangeas can be a bit slow in their initial establishment period, especially with the first summer after planting. As long as they haven’t struggled with wilting or discoloration, you’re already on the right path. Remember that consistent moisture and good mulching can support root development as the season progresses.

We appreciate your patience and optimism — ‘time will tell’ is a wise attitude, and we’re here to help if you want advice on pruning or fertilizing as the plants mature. Feel free to reach out anytime or check out our gardening blog for tips specifically for hydrangeas.

Looking forward to hearing about their progress!

Bloom on,
