Delicate and silky pompoms of petals, the Red and White Anenome (Anemone 'Peony Red and White') is a darling perennial with incredible voluminous blooms that are rosy-red at the interior centers and fade to pink and then to greenish-white at the tips of each delicate petal! These cold-hardy beauties have dark green cut-leaf foliage for an almost ruffled backdrop from which the long, slender stems emerge! stems emerge!
Forming neat and tidy mounds, the singly-born, gracefully nodding tri-color double buds emerge from the dense clump of foliage, and then finally open to the sun to reveal the Peony-like blossoms! Butterflies and beneficial pollinators adore these blooms that can sometimes have rosy bases where the stem meets the blossom.
Deer resistant and so easy to care for, these are sweetly perfumed petals that bloom throughout the cooler month of April or May in most growing zones, preferring zones 3 through 8. And if conditions are right, you'll enjoy a rebloom once the summer's heat gives way to autumn! That's double the opportunity to snip a few of the slender stems for bouquets and floral arrangements.
Planting and Application:
Even when not in bloom, the gorgeous fringed foliage creates tidy mounds of green that accent a wide variety of other plants, either as a mixed-perennial garden addition, or as part of a row along the front of your garden! Delightful facer plants and edging, ring larger shrubs and perennials with this greenery or use as a darling addition throughout pollinator and cottage borders.
Anemones love cool moist meadows and perform best in rich organic soils planted in drifts or natural settings. Also great along streams, ponds or water gardens. Add to your shade gardens where it pairs well with Astilbe, Coral Bells and Bleeding Hearts. In more sunny but cool locations they mingle politely with Columbines and Lilies and look divine with Rose bushes! The glistening white blossoms are a natural choice to include in a Moon Garden!
- Long Slender Stems & Double Rose-Red, Pink & Greenish-White Petals
- Mildly Fragrant - Calls Pollinators
- Fringed Deep Green Mounded Foliage
- Great in Containers, Cut Flower Gardens & Borders
- Herbaceous Specimen or Facer Perennial
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Anemones do not like heat, so provide a full sun location in cooler climates, but afternoon shade or dappled shade all day in the hotter growing zones. Preferring to be planted in moderately moist soil, they appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over their roots, which they do best when the root ball is kept cool and moist. Prune back these tender herbaceous perennials in late autumn once all the foliage has died back.
- Full Sun to Partial Shade
- Consistently Moderately Moist Conditions
- Organically Rich Well-Drained Soil
- Appreciates Arborist Mulch Chips
- Prune/Clean Mounds in Late Autumn
