Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 4 - 8
Pretty drifts of snowy white flowers with purple anthers, the unique green Parker Pear Tree (Pyrus 'Parker') features a deep burgundy-bronze blushed fruit where the sun kisses them! Ripening in the summer months to early fall, you'll love picking a fresh ripe, sun-warmed Pear right off your tree! You heard that right!
While most Pears must be picked when green and then ripened on a counter or brown paper bag, Parker seems to be just fine when picked fully tree-ripened! Parker does not have many issues with core rot like other Pear varieties! Picking at the green/ripe stage is best as they will keep the longest when refrigerated.
Parker Pear has a compact vase-shaped form and canopy that was introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1934, making it just shy of being an heirloom! Parker Pear Trees grow about 15-20 feet in height but can be pruned smaller as needed to fit your property.
Very cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, Parker features lush dark green, glossy pointy leaves that take on a deep purple fall color to accent the bronzed purple blushed fruit! Versatile with a superb crunch, juiciness, and flavor, Parker is good for fresh eating and baking, and when picked before they're ripe, Parker Pears store very well!
Planting and Application:
Parker Pear Tree is a gorgeous specimen in its own right! From the clouds of blooms, beautiful glossy leaves, fall color, and luscious fruit, Parker holds its own in the landscape as an edible ornamental tree! Often grown as a shade tree, as a front yard lawn tree, or as an Espalier conversation piece anywhere in the sun!
Pollinating with the Luscious Pear for the best yield, so you'll need some room for both trees! Try planting one to shade a side yard and your Parker Pear as a front yard specimen for all the neighborhood to drool over! Or try high-density planting techniques or groupings for backyard shade! Just don't be sitting under your trees when it's harvest time. But you'll love lounging beneath them in the spring as the bees buzz and in their shade during the summer months!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Pear trees need full sun, this variety is considered a mid-size tree. Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, favoring the drying power of the morning sun. Plant in a well-enriched, organically enhanced site that has loamy, well-drained soil. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Situated in an area that is protected from frost pockets and with good air circulation.
Provide ample water, deeply saturating the root ball, especially for your young tree while it becomes established, not allowing it to dry out between waterings. Once established, you can reduce your watering to moderate, yet consistent moisture during the heat of summer and when fruiting.
For best results, fertilize your tree regularly with Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Fertilizer or a good organic, slow-release fertilizer. Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots.
Keep it smaller for smaller yards with annual summer pruning. That way you'll have no problem accommodating Parker and its pollinator! Prune to keep an open canopy so that both sunlight and airflow reach the interior.
