Tropical Appeal In A Versatile Evergreen

Japanese Aralia, also known as Paper Plant or Fatsia Japonica, is a broadleaf, evergreen shrub with ornamental features. Plant several for a lush hedge, or plant just one as an accent in your side yard. These even do well as houseplants or as container plants your patio or front porch.

Deeply lobed, dark green foliage is the mainstay of this impressive plant. Each leaf grows up to 16 inches wide! The large leaves are leathery with a high gloss and a lush tropical appeal that is sure to draw the eye of every passerby.

The glossy sheen is particularly adept at picking up the light, so you're sure to enjoy its affect in the afternoon sun or moonlight. Your Japanese Aralia's lovely countenance is further enhanced in autumn when flowers appear, each tiny ball of creamy blossoms held aloft on a thin stem.

As the season progresses, the delicate blooms are replaced by obsidian berries, a further decorative feature, and a tasty treat for your feathered friends to enjoy during the colder months.

It has a spreading nature and can be grown as a shrub or tree, depending upon pruning (which will determine its height). Fatsia Japonica has a hardy nature, is tolerant of shade and even does well indoors (either as a plant or cut for floral arrangements).

It's easy to see why the Fatsia Japonica has long been a favorite among gardeners. A commonly used plant, it seems to draw the eye no matter where it is placed, and will likewise make a decorative statement in your home this year.

Hardy

I have mine in an container and I am still undecided where to put it. I like the indoor color and shapes of the leaves and it also looks great on my deck. Going to flip a coin, maybe?

Hi Misstee,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Fatsia Japonica! It’s wonderful to hear how much you’re already enjoying its lovely color and bold leaf shapes. Both indoor and deck settings can highlight its beauty in different ways, so flipping a coin sounds like a fun idea—but you might also consider how much sunlight the Fatsia will receive in each spot. Typically, it thrives in bright, indirect light, which could make the deck a great location if it’s shielded from harsh afternoon sun.

If you decide to keep it indoors, placing it near a window with filtered light will ensure it stays hardy and vibrant. Container gardening can be a flexible way to experiment, so don’t hesitate to move your Fatsia around based on how it responds. Also, monitoring the moisture so the soil is slightly moist but never soggy will keep your plant feeling great.

Please feel free to reach out anytime if you want tips on feeding schedules or pest prevention—it’s always a pleasure to help your plant thrive wherever you settle it!

Wishing you happy planting,

Eye catching

I am presently using the paper plant in small area of my side yard to create some eye attraction and take away from a ugly down spout. It works for me. Going to try one indoors because if its unique leaf shape.

Dear Stu890,
