Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Adding a mix of native trees to your landscape is a rewarding initiative that pays off in so many ways. Support your local ecology, and enjoy a relaxing space you can be proud of. With a beautiful upright rounded form, the Ohio Buckeye Tree (Aesculus glabra) works as a standout specimen or in a natural grouping. You'll be thrilled with the exceptional spring-flowering display. Also known as the Texas Buckeye, or Horse Chestnut, this is no "wimpy" tree. Everything from the corrugated leaves to the corky bark to the leathery, prickled nut husks looks strong!
Tall spires of creamy-yellow panicles cover the outside of the canopy, each highlighted with a reddish-orange center. Give your garden visitors a treat and plan to enjoy these noteworthy blooms for several weeks. Butterflies and hummingbirds appreciate the nectar resource of these long-lasting flowers. The summer foliage is another attractive feature to enjoy with family and friends nearby. Ohio Buckeye foliage features sturdy stems and a marvelously bold texture.
Just wait until the temperatures drop in autumn. The large leaves fire up into an intense red-orange that can be seen all the way down the street. Known to attract Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Grosbeak, Chickadees, Titmice, Thrush, Crows, Jay, and Vireos to eat the insects or roost among the branches. The blooms even call their fair share of Hummingbirds too! These are also wonderful caterpillar Host Plant for the Saddled Prominent Moth and Filament Bearer Moth larvae.
Planting and Application:
A deciduous tree that typically grows 50 to 75 feet tall, Buckeye features a broad, oval-rounded crown. This tree's strength is recognized by birds and wildlife that enjoy roosting, nesting, and feeding among the mighty branches! Squirrels will tear around the tree after the mahogany brown nuts which also provide added interest. Keep one in your pocket for good luck, or collect them to create handsome homemade wreaths.
These are fantastic shade trees and will certainly set your yard apart from all the rest! These are wonderful for both front and back yard decoration and shade. Site them where you can see them from an outdoor seating area...a blooming Buckeye makes a perfect focal point! In groups and rows, these are formidable windbreaks and shelterbelts.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Buckeyes thrive in full sun and partial shade and in average to moist conditions, even tolerating periodic drought! Plant in nearly any well-drained soil with a mulched bed. Prune to shape only after flowering to not accidentally cut off any of next year's blooms, however, major pruning of entire limbs should be done when the plant is dormant.
