Improved Peach with Superior Qualities

In this time of modern fruit breeding, commercial fruit eating quality is often ignored for shelf life and shipping concerns. Few can deny the superior quality of the O'Henry Peach. This is a variety that should have set the modern commercial standard, but was almost lost to obscurity in the 1970's.

Grant Merrill, a well-known private plant breeder from Red Bluff, California, worked closely with a number of California nurseries through the mid-1900's. One such nursery was the Burchell Nursery of Oakdale, California. During the 1950's and 60's, Irwin Burchell is said to have worked very closely with Merrill and in 1968, Burchell nursery became the grower and distributor of the exciting new selection, the O' Henry Peach.

The O' Henry was considered a breakthrough because unlike the popular commercial varieties of the time, such as Red Haven or Elberta, the O' Henry was almost all red, which distinguished it right away from other yellow and blushed red peach varieties.

In addition, the skin of the O' Henry lacked the fuzziness of other peach varieties. One of the most outstanding qualities of the O'Henry was its firmness, it's freestone pit, a great shelf life and shipping quality when picked at peak flavor. It would seem it had everything that the peach lover could want.

Of all the peaches that Grant Merrill had developed, he said that the O'Henry was by far his favorite.

But, sad to say, Grant Merrill would never get to see how successful his creation would become. In 1973, Merrill passed away and by the mid-1970 his O'Henry peach was in high demand.

By the 1980's, O'Henry began to be planted throughout the West, Northwest, and east to Utah with a high degree of success. In the 1980's, it was common to find the O'Henry sold by its name in the grocery store.

Though it never became as popular east of the Mississippi due to it susceptibility to Bacterial Spot, it is commonly planted and successfully grown by those who choose to spray to control the disease.

By the early 1990's, and in part due to the early coloring of the O' Henry, growers began to pick too early, thereby lowering the demand for the lesser quality fruit. Today, it is very unusual to find the O'Henry Peach sold by its name anywhere but at the occasional farmer's market.

Since coming off patent, the O'Henry Peach has become one of the top peaches planted in the home garden throughout the United States. The fruit's ability to be eaten fresh, dried, cooked in pies, or frozen for a later usage, has made it quite often one of the first trees planted in the backyard.
