Simple Growing & Care Guide
Bigleaf Hydrangeas are very easy to grow deciduous shrubs!
- Sunlight: Prefers partial shade to full sun; afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter climates.
- Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil; acidic soil enhances deeper tones, while alkaline soil keeps flowers cherry-red.
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in hot or dry weather.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning required—remove spent flowers after blooming and trim dead stems in early spring.
- Bigleaf Hydrangea flowers are pH dependent – acidic soil will make them pinker, and alkaline soils make the flowers more blue. For a purple hue, keep your soil more neutral to acid.
- Mulch: Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around your shrub's root system.
