Hardy, Ornamental Plum Tree

Native American Plum is a deciduous, single trunk tree or multi-stemmed shrub. Nature Hills Native American Plum is sold as the multi-stemmed form and would work well in your yard as a specimen planting or used in a small hedge. As a shrub, it suckers freely and can form large colonies. It's adaptive to a variety of location and soil conditions and is even drought-tolerant.

Your Native American Plum tree is also known as the Native Plum, Hedge Plum, Sloe or Wild Plum. This variety is usually grown for ornamental value and not for fruit production, although the fruit can be used if you desire.

Clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers appear in spring. Toothed, oblong leaves fill out your tree for summer, quickly followed by the 1-inch, red plums that ripen in early in the season.

The plum flesh is yellow and although suitable for eating raw, is best used in preserves and jellies. Of course if you choose to leave the fruit on your tree, your wildlife is sure to make use of it.

In autumn the leaves turn yellow to red for great fall color. Branches and twigs are an attractive dark reddish-brown, so even through the winter months there is a decorative quality to your Plum tree.

If you'd like a tree for your yard that requires little care yet is lovely to behold (and provides a tasty harvest), then Native American Plum is for you.
