Have you ever visited Nantucket? There is something comforting and familiar about being there, even if you've never been there before!
Is it the quaintness of the town? The warmth of the people? The all-American architecture? The simpleness of their well-laid-out shrub borders? Yes, yes, yes, and yes!
You probably can't makeover your town with the quaintness inherent to Nantucket and there's a good chance that your house isn't on the register of historic places like many of the homes there, but you can capture some of the spirit and style of this seaside resort!
The Nantucket Privet Shrub (Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Nantucket') is a fast-growing shrub that is either deciduous in cooler climates or a broadleaf evergreen in warmer growing zones, depending on the severity of your winters. It handles just about any soil condition, even harsh ones.
The deep green leaves are the perfect backdrop for sweet white flower clusters in the spring. These sprays are especially showy on the Nantucket, and stand out against the darker foliage! Pollinators will frequent these blooms, and even a Hummingbird or two! The darker leaves have bright yellow undersides for a unique contrast! In the winter in cooler climates, the foliage can take on a coppery dark bronze-green hue.
It is equally happy if you sheer it or let it be! If you do let Nantucket grow naturally, you and your songbirds will see the tiny dark fruit that appears. Members of the Olive family, these shrubs thrive throughout USDA planting zones 5 to 9.
Planting and Application:
One of the best features of the Nantucket Privet is its ability to thrive in coastal conditions and salinity. They also tolerate harsh conditions like periods of drought and even occasionally boggy soil. Privet handles urban conditions and pollution beautifully!
The flowering beauty means Nantucket is a lovely accent on its own! You can even trim these up into a tree-form to reveal the lower trunks. But if you want a flowering privacy hedge that can also be sheared formally? Highly adaptable to a wide variety of sizes and shapes, you can keep the Nantucket Privet smaller if needed or allow it to grow to its full 10-15 feet in height!
Whether you use Nantucket as a 3-foot high foundation hedge against your white clapboard walls or let it reach its full height to keep the looky-loos from peering in. Nantucket Privet will give your yard an air of importance and a certain formal gentility!
It's especially easy with a well-manicured hedge or windbreak. Add a fluffy natural shrub to brighten your mixed shrub borders, or include a series of these shrubs in a property-defining privacy hedge! You'll love having living walls and dark green leafy fences!
Create tall garden room walls that are trimmed slim to not take up too much space! Whether formal or informal, the Nantucket will envelop your outdoor dining and seating areas in seclusion!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Privet does well in full sun, and the color will be better the more sun it has. Provide a well-drained site and water deeply and regularly after its initial planting, but once it is established, Privet shrubs become drought-resistant.
Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster for lifelong symbiotic support, and regular moisture access during that first year. A spring application of fertilizer keeps your shrubs growing green! Provide a 3-4 inch deep top-dressing of arborist mulch to hold moisture, insulate the roots, reduce weed competition, and add a finishing touch to your garden design!
Privet doesn't need it, but annual pruning after flowering can control size. But you can prune if needed or even shear if a formal hedge is desired. Leave these shrubs to grow naturally to enjoy the blooms and fruit for your wildlife, then choose renewal pruning every 3-5 years. Remove the older, fatter branches out at the main trunk or from the root zone.
