The unique Musa Basjoo Banana Tree (Musa 'Basjoo'), also knows as the Japanese Banana, is a cold-hardy, herbaceous plant. In fact, the Musa Basjoo Banana tree is said to be able to grow in all 50 states!

Your Musa Basjoo Banana is an impressive variety of Banana Tree to be sure! Its 2-foot wide leaves can grow up to 6 feet in length, overlapping for a trunk-like appearance at its center. Musa Basjoo grows so fast that under optimal conditions it will add both a new leaf and 2 feet of growth in a single week!

In some cases, Basjoo Banana may flower in summer, displaying yellow-tinted, creamy blossoms that precede small, green non-edible fruit. However, your Basjoo may not flower or fruit, and it's an adaptable Banana variety! You can easily bring it indoors for winter, or even just grow it as a houseplant if you prefer.

If you'd love an exotic, tropical appearance for your home, inside or out, the Musa Basjoo Banana plant is the perfect choice in a cold-hardy Banana! You can count on its stellar performance in your home this year!

How to Use Musa Basjoo Banana Tree In The Landscape

Most people grow the Musa Basjoo Banana tree just for its incredible ornamental nature and exotic foliage. These fast-growing specimens are fantastic tucked into exotic planters or used as a thriller and specimen plant in mixed plantings and containers!

Plant a few next to your pool or patio for that rare tropical appeal that enhances an area like no other plant. Basjoo Banana does well in containers, creating an impressive display for your home's front entrance.

Providing a fast-growing tropical element, these look fantastic around your pool or patio, as a solo focal point, in long orderly rows in unique pots, or mixed throughout other tropical plants such as Palms and Ginger, and especially other Banana species! Canna and Elephant Ears both complement this foliage and the mix of color options all play off each other beautifully!

Just add a hammock and a drink with an umbrella and you’ll have all the makings for a tropical getaway right in your own backyard!

It's sometimes called a 'Fiber Banana' because it's valued in Japan for its usefulness in fabrics, so it can even be a conversation starter!

#ProPlantTips For Care

Plant in full sun for the best growth and in a protected area from strong winds to keep your leaves looking their best!

These easy-care plants won’t take up much room either! Tuck into any location with well-drained soil and consistent moisture access. A rich, organic mix is best to support the fast growth your tree will put on! Once established they can tolerate some drought, but for the best look and health of your plant, be sure to provide consistent moisture!

It's fast-growing, disease-resistant and extremely cold-hardy! When protected, Musa Basjoo can withstand temperatures down to -20F! Mulch the roots well to hold in moisture and insulate them from cold.

Plant in USDA zones 5 through 10, or can be an annual in cooler zones. These can be moved into a greenhouse or enclosed porch for harsh winters.

It's adaptable to a variety of soils and can even tolerate a bit of drought or shade, especially once established. It's evergreen in some areas, and in colder climates will die back to the ground, for an orderly winter appearance.

To support the growth and have a strong trunk and lush growth throughout the growing season, use a fertilizer geared for tropical plants such as Dr. Earth Exotic Blend.

Incredibly exotic and ease of care are just two of the fantastic reasons to order your own Musa Basjoo Banana Tree from NatureHills.com today! Turn any humdrum landscape into a tropical escape!

Basu hardy banana tree

I live in the Texas panhandle and was unsure of hour this tree would perform. I was amazed! I have had it about 2 months. I planted it in a large container with lots of nutrients and put on afternoon sun. However, here the days are too hot and not much humidity. I moved it to dappled shade and it has taken off. I can't believe how quickly it is growing. In just a few days the big leaves are appearing! Very pleased and excited!

Hello Rainey,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Basu hardy banana tree! We're delighted to hear that your tree is thriving, especially given the challenging environment of the Texas panhandle. It sounds like you made some excellent adjustments by moving it to dappled shade and providing nutrient-rich soil – such thoughtful care clearly pays off.

If you ever want to optimize water and humidity levels even further, you might consider using a humidifier tray or misting occasionally during the hottest days to mimic more tropical conditions. Also, regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer can keep your banana tree vigorous as it continues to grow those impressive leaves. Should you have any questions or need more tips, we’re always here to help.

Thanks again for your wonderful feedback, and happy growing!

Hello Rainey,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Basu hardy banana tree! We’re thrilled to hear that despite challenging conditions in the Texas panhandle, your tree is thriving and growing so quickly. Your thoughtful approach—using a large container with nutrients and adjusting the tree’s location to dappled shade—shows great plant care intuition, especially with the hot and dry climate you described.

As your tree settles in, be sure to keep an eye on consistent watering since containers can dry out faster in those dry, hot conditions. Mulching on top of the soil can also help retain moisture and keep roots cool. We have some helpful care guides on container-grown banana plants and managing plants in hot, arid climates on our site—you might find those tips useful as your tropical beauty continues to flourish.

It’s exciting to see your “big leaves” developing quickly—this tree will bring quite the statement piece to your outdoor space! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or updates.

Blessings to you and happy growing!

I love it but the leaves are damaged easily by wind. It still looks good but it is best planted in a sunny but sheltered location.

Hello Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and feedback with your plant! We’re glad to hear you love it, even if the leaves have been a bit sensitive to wind. Your insight about planting in a sunny but sheltered spot is spot on—this can really help protect the foliage from damage while still giving the plant plenty of light to thrive.

If you haven’t already, you might try placing a temporary windbreak or consider planting near a structure or evergreen that offers some natural protection. Also, ensuring the plant is well-watered can bolster its resilience against stress from wind exposure.

Should you have any questions about optimal placement or care, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help every step of the way!

Hi Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful feedback! We’re glad to hear you love your plant and appreciate you noting how the leaves handle wind. Placing saplings in a sunny but sheltered spot is excellent advice, as it helps protect their delicate foliage while still giving them the light they need to thrive.

If you’d like, we can also recommend using windbreaks like garden screening or planting alongside a fence or hedge to provide that added protection. If you have any other questions about plant placement or care, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!
