Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Perfect for small yards and tight spots, Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin') is truly a four-season shrub. In early summer, profuse blooms are held upright on sturdy stems; these exquisite flower clusters reach well over six inches long and age to a dazzling, rich pink hue.

Munchin is a naturally dwarf Oakleaf Hydrangea introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum. Every year during the growing season, you'll also be treated to a bold display of dark green Oakleaf foliage. The textured leaves will burnish to a magnificent burgundy-red as cooler nighttime temps roll back around in fall.

Planting and Application:

Petite Munchkin is happy to provide nectar for butterflies and shelter for birds. It's a wonderful selection of a native shrub featuring a dense, compact habit that looks great year-round...especially when each branch is covered by a cap of fluffy, white snow.

  • Add plenty of visual interest to a partially shaded spot in your yard with a low hedge or mass planting. Space them 30 inches apart on center for a continuous hedge.
  • Create a garden folly by lining either side of a twisting, turning woodland path with a Munchkin hedge. Add an emerald-green gazebo at the end as a Destination Spot...kids would love it!
  • Add structure and long-lasting color to the shaded edges of your Butterfly Garden. They'll perform well in filtered shade with no more than four hours of sunlight a day.
  • Place one as a specimen in a Zen Garden. You'll surely appreciate the noteworthy interplay between the large-scale leaves and the strong form of the erect blooms.
  • Underplant several in the filtered shade of Eastern Redbud, Japanese Maple or Flowering Dogwood trees. It easily finishes off the design of your planting bed with rustic sophistication.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant in rich, well-drained soil and partial shade for best flowering display. You'll want plenty of the large blooms to sneak for indoor arrangements, after all.

  • This landscape investment is valuable...give it life-long support with symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster added in the planting hole. Get more expert planting tips from our Horticulture Staff.
  • Water regularly and add pine straw or pine bark mulch to a depth of three inches. Keep the mulch pulled back away from touching the stems.
  • Munchkin is a shrub that blooms on old wood; so wait to prune any crossing or damaged branches until after the first flush of flowers is finished in summer. Keep the dried blooms on the shrub overwinter for a welcome sight in a barren landscape.
