Tiny, Soft, and Dark Green

The Sagina Irish Moss, 'Sagina subulata', is one of the most popular ground covers around. The lush, deep green foliage stays compact and produces tiny white flower which appear late spring into early summer.

Sagina looks like a scratch-proof sponge, but feels so much softer. This plant spreads rapidly to form a carpet that looks especially nice against gray stone!

'Irish Moss' performs best in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. It dislikes drought and the other extreme, wet feet. It is extremely dense and spreads by creeping stems to form a mossy carpet.

'Irish Moss is just the ground cover you need between paving stones, rock walls, or as an edging plant that tolerates moderate foot traffic!

Great accent piece.

This little guy looks awesome in my stones. I space them throughout my front landscaping, which consists of stones and small shrubs/plants no bigger than 2-3 feet in height and width. The tiny white flowers add a contrasting burst of color among the various rock colors, and the bright medium green looks great once the flowers are gone. Quite heat/sun resistant in zone 5 too, where they are in full sun for 9 hours a day in my front yard.

Dear Fred S.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Irish Moss! It sounds like it’s the perfect accent piece nestled among your stones and other plants, and we’re thrilled to hear how well it's performing in your Zone 5 garden with full sun exposure. The way you’ve described the tiny white flowers creating bursts of color, along with the vibrant green even after blooming, paints a lovely picture of your thoughtfully designed landscape.

If you want to keep these gems thriving, be sure to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hotter spells, as Irish Moss prefers well-drained but damp conditions. Given your success so far with full sun and heat tolerance, your open front yard is clearly ideal! We also recommend occasional feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring to promote greener, lusher growth.

Should you ever want to expand or complement your current setup, low-growing ground covers like Creeping Thyme or Blue Star Creeper could enhance the textures alongside your Irish Moss. We’re always here to help if you want more personalized advice for your rock-and-shrub garden.

Thank you again for trusting NatureHills.com and for providing such thoughtful feedback. Happy gardening!

Rooting for your garden’s success,
Your Nature Hills Plant Care Team

Hello FredS,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with Irish Moss! We’re delighted to hear how beautifully it complements your stone landscaping and small shrubs. The contrasting bursts of white flowers combined with the bright green foliage truly make for a charming and serene display. It’s also fantastic to know the plant thrives so well in Zone 5 with such intense sun exposure—your setup sounds like the perfect sunny garden tableau!

If you’re ever interested in nurturing your Irish Moss even further, soaking the roots deeply a couple of times a week during particularly hot spells can help maintain that vibrant green hue. Also, since you mentioned your stones and shrubs, you might enjoy experimenting with mulches or light groundcovers that retain moisture without detracting from your stone accents. Feel free to reach out if you'd like suggestions tailored to your exact landscaping.

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills and sharing your garden success. Your thoughtful feedback helps other gardeners at our nursery create similarly beautiful spaces.

Wishing you happy planting,
