Flowering Mimosa Tree

  • Tropical Pink Blooms
  • Fern-Like Foliage
  • Fast Growing
  • Drought & Heat Tolerant
  • Easy Care
  • Smaller Shade Tree

You may have enjoyed delicious champagne and orange juice Mimosa cocktails at brunch, but the Mimosa tree (Albizia julibrissin) is an elegant tree for your landscape! Also known as the Persian Silk Tree because of its beautiful, light to deep pink flower clusters with their unusual thread-like petals. The flower seems to be as light as silk.

Originally from China, Southwestern and Eastern Asia, these flowering trees were introduced to the United States because of its eye-catching good looks. It features an unusual, tropical, and exotic-looking flair. It simply adores heat and humidity and tolerates drought very well.

If you are looking for a fast-growing deciduous shade tree, it's hard to beat this choice. Mimosa trees are vase-shaped, flat-topped, fine-textured ornamental tree that puts on quite a show.

The bark is generally smooth and gray. The fancy, ornate foliage is similar to a fern. The delicate flower clusters grow on top of the foliage. They look like lush pink clouds of cotton candy for a good part of the summer.

The curious pea-like seed pods turn from green to brown and rustle in the breeze. There is just something special about this memorable tree. The kids will think Dr. Suess created these Mimosa flowers!

How to Use Mimosa Trees in Your Landscape

The lacy, graceful Mimosa is quite versatile. Mimosas work well in less formal situations and in groups out away from pools and patios, where they can be allowed to take on their natural form. Site this tree wisely in the right setting, and you'll absolutely love it.

Use this tree to create a gorgeous garden wall or backdrop at the back edge of your lot. As a legume, it will fix nitrogen in your soil. As an added bonus, the beautiful flowers produce a sweet nectar that attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and pollinators to your yard.

The dappled shade value of the Mimosa can not be understated. It features a wide-spreading canopy, that is liberally adorned with flowers that appear to float on top of the leaves for most of the season.

The Mimosa is a wonderful, fast-growing tree that’s a fantastic drought tolerant shade tree for the center of your garden, or to block the hot afternoon sun coming into a south or southwest-facing window.

#ProPlantTips for Care

These are hardy trees in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 10. They love the heat and tolerate dry soil types beautifully! Plant them in full sun in fast-draining soil. To help insulate the root system and hold in moisture more evenly, provide a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the soil surface.

This hardy, memorable tree grows too well in certain regions in the United States. Nature Hills uses a software system called Plant Sentry™ to follow all local, state and federal regulations for plant materials. We always protect our customer's communities. We'll let you know if it's regulated in your area.

Despite the fast growth rate, Mimosa does not require much pruning when selected for areas that can allow it to grow to full size. These can be large trees and grow to 20-35 feet in height. Study the Plant Highlights to understand the space requirement. Understand that the canopy of the Mimosa gets just as wide as the tree grows.

It's well suited to hot, dry, low water situations where other trees would struggle. It's also adapted to colder climates with high summer humidity. It also has the ability to grow in alkaline soil, but will grow best with regular watering in that soil type.

Ensure new trees are consistently watered to ensure they are established. For a gorgeous, fast-growing ornamental shade tree, you can't go wrong with the Mimosa Tree. Buy Mimosa trees for your landscape today!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Grow a Mimosa Tree

Mimosa trees love full sun and, once established, are low water usage plants. Prune in early spring to remove broken branches and open the canopy.

Is a Mimosa tree a good tree? What are Mimosa trees good for?

Fast-growing, shade producing and colorful all growing season. Mimosa trees have gorgeous pink powderpuff blossoms and tropical bipinnately compound and odd-pinnately compound foliage that gives these trees fine-textured fern-like leaves that are easy to clean up. These are incredible flowering ornamental trees for a wide range of growing zones and lend a tropical, Mediterranean look to your landscape.

Why are Mimosa trees a problem? Why is the Mimosa tree considered invasive?

In some climates, Mimosa tree seeds can become an invasive nuisance. The seed pods can spread seedling trees and choke out native trees because of their fast growth. Plant Sentry™ helps NatureHills.com remain in compliance with agricultural law to protect you and your environment from any plants bought at NatureHills.com and shipped to your home, preventing serious pests, diseases or invasive plants from spreading in areas where these trees may do too well.

Mimosa

Nothing beats the scent of mimosa after a summer shower. We planted one in the garden some years ago and it grew into a beautiful ornamental tree. The only drawback was planting it too close to the house. The falling blossoms, small leaves and pods can make for a messy situation if fall on cars on the house or patio. Otherwise they a add a tropical flair to any yard.

Hello Anthony,

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely experience with the mimosa tree! We absolutely agree—the delicate scent after a summer shower is truly something special. It’s wonderful to hear that your mimosa has become a beautiful ornamental addition to your garden. You’ve made a great observation about the placement, as these trees do tend to drop blossoms, leaves, and pods that can’s create a bit of extra cleanup, especially when planted close to your home or vehicles.

For future planting choices or for customers facing a similar situation, we often recommend situating mimosa trees in areas where the natural shedding won’t impact patios or driveways. Also, regular maintenance like gentle sweeping beneath the tree canopy can help keep things tidy during the shedding season. If you ever want tips on pruning or maintenance, we’re always here to help!

Thanks again for your thoughtful review. It’s feedback like yours that helps nature lovers everywhere get the best from their trees and gardens.

Hi Anthony,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your mimosa tree! We’re delighted to hear it has brought such a beautiful, tropical touch to your garden and that you enjoy that lovely scent after a summer shower. Your thoughtful insight about spacing near the house is really valuable—not only for you but for anyone considering planting mimosa, as those delicate blossoms and pods can indeed create some clean-up challenges when falling on nearby surfaces.

If you find the maintenance a bit much, one trick that helps some gardeners is placing a ground cover or mulch under the tree to catch debris, which makes cleanup simpler, or pruning slightly to reduce pod production after flowering. For future projects, reviewing our planting location guides might offer helpful tips on positioning ornamental trees for maximum enjoyment with minimal hassle.

Thanks again for your lovely words and feedback—your garden story brightens our day as much as a mimosa tree brightens the yard!
