Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 2-7
Blue-green year-round garden structure and form, the impeccable Meyer's Spruce Tree (Picea meyeri) is a fantastic selection of the native Spruce tree with lovely spikey short-needled Spruce with needles that encircle each branch! The lovely evergreen color lights up the winter landscape and anchors the garden throughout the growing season with a true blue-green color!
Meyer's naturally pyramidal form and a very compact and densely growing selection of Spruce. These slow-and-steady growers aren't in any rush to get massive in size, meaning you will enjoy their mighty presence for ages! Once they do get some growth on them, birds and wildlife flock to these bird-friendly hotels and buffets! Spruce Trees have purplish male cones in the spring and long dangling green female cones which transform into long, scaly brown slender cones in the fall.
Squirrels and several species of songbird love the pine nuts in these dangling morsels and you'll love the crafts you can do with them too! They're of course beautiful ornamental interests all winter! Discovered in Western China in 1908 and named after Frank N. Meyer of the US Department of Agriculture. Meyer collected seeds for Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum.
Planting and Application:
These are classic Christmas tree-shaped Conifers and add that structured elegance and year-round color to your landscape! A single specimen will look picture-perfect as the focal point of your front yard! Stand groupings in your backyard for privacy and bird sanctuaries, while also creating habitat, shade, and shelter for you and your local wildlife.
Meyer's Spruce is ideal for shelterbelts as they are bulking up a windbreak. Interplant among faster-growing, but shorter-lived species for a long-lasting and varied hedge that also offers privacy and color! Not only blocking the wind but noise and slowing drifting snow too. Evergreens look lovely anywhere in the landscape! Cold hardy from USDA growing zones 2 through 7, these trees eventually reach 40-60 feet in height and keep to a narrow 15-20 feet in width.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Spruce Trees are notoriously hardy, rugged, and cold hardy Conifers! Thriving in full sun, poor soil, and very cold climates, they have so many adaptations to make them ideal for gracing your well-conditioned lawn and garden soils with ease! Place them in a well-drained location away from soggy spots and mulch the roots very well. Little to no pruning is necessary, but only prune when dormant and it's best to leave the branches to the ground! Provide moderate consistent moisture for young trees and then low moisture once established. Don’t let Conifers go into winter with dry soil.
- Full Sun
- Prefers Acidic Well-Drained Organic Soil
- Moderate Consistent Moisture to Establish - Then Low Moisture
- Tolerates Humidity Better Than Colorado Spruce
- Cold Hardy, Drought & Deer Resistant
The Meyer's Spruce Trees are easy to care for and adaptable evergreens that light up your landscape and provide so much structure and elegance to beds, hedges, and wildlife-friendly shelterbelts throughout the coldest of the US growing zones!
