Mediterranean Fan Palm is one of the most versatile and ornamental of the Palms. It's even cold-tolerant, and in fact, one of the hardiest Palm trees you'll find.

Your Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis) is a multi-trunked Palm that can be left to grow naturally in a shrub-like manner. However, many prefer to prune it into a bundle-like appearance that highlights the rough-hewn, tropical trunk that Palms are so well-known for.

Each blade of the huge, fan-like, palmate foliage is 36 inches or longer, creating a spectacular "palm". The 24-inch wide Palm leaves form a symmetrical crown atop the 4-foot stems that support them from the trunk.

Their blue-green coloring creates a superb accompaniment to the darker trunk accented by golden-yellow flowers growing on tight panicles! Colorful orange fruit mature in summer at the base of the foliage. Cold-hardier than most Palms, these trees can handle short dips below freezing temperatures throughout USDA planting zones 7 to 11.

Landscape Application:

Mediterranean Fan Palm is ideal as an exotic focal point plant for use in raised planters, large containers, and postage stamp backyards and courtyards. The wide leaves cast pinpoint shade and a row along your seating areas and poolside lounge areas! Got a balcony garden and no yard? These space-saving trees are perfect in sunny planters!

Plant one as a specimen tree in your front yard or along a walkway for a distinctive welcome to your home. Imagine using Fan Palms as container plants for your patio where some subtle back-lighting will highlight their gently swaying fronds and the unique shadowed patterns they cast. What a tropical, restful feel this Palm can bring to your home!

Fan Palm's evergreen nature provides year-round interest and is so versatile that it can even be grown indoors as a houseplant if desired. In the spring, tiny yellow blooms will barely peek out at you from behind the foliage stems, transitioning by autumn into tiny drupes. These dark yellow/brown fruits ripen to provide a valuable treat for your wildlife.

  • Evergreen, Tropical Appearance
  • Golden-Yellow Flower Panicles
  • Evergreen Palm-Shaped Foliage
  • Multi-Trunked Form - Tree or Shrub
  • Great In Containers & Can Be Grown Indoors
  • Gorgeous Specimens & Space-Saving Shade & Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Mediterranean Fan Palm has no significant disease concerns, is low maintenance, and is considered very easy to grow. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil with moderate moisture needs. Once established, Fan Palm is even drought tolerant. Be cautious when pruning the damaged or yellowed foliage as the leaf bases are covered in pointed spines.

  • Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Soils
  • Moderate Moisture - Handles Drought & Heat
  • Prune Foliage As It Yellows/Is Damaged
  • Cold Hardy, Tough & Durable

An exotic Palm tree with a hardy nature, the Mediterranean Fan Palm is an easy way to bring a tropical ambiance to your landscape today.

Cold tolerant palm

Finally I am getting a chance to try and grow a palm tree in zone 7. so far it is doing well.

Dear Georgia,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Mediterranean Fan Palm Tree! We're thrilled to hear that your palm is doing well in Zone 7. It’s wonderful to see you challenge yourself with a more cold-tolerant palm, and your success so far is truly encouraging.

For continued success, make sure to provide some winter protection during harsh chills—using mulch around the base and possibly frost cloths during extreme cold snaps can help your palm thrive year after year. Also, ensuring good drainage will keep those roots happy throughout seasons.

Inside plant

Living in a colder climate so I have to bring my plant inside for the winter. The Mediterranean Fan palm keeps me touch with the thoughts of warm sunny days of the south.

Hello Sun,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Mediterranean Fan Palm Tree! It’s wonderful to hear how your plant brings a touch of warm, southern sunshine to your home during the chilly months. Caring for tropical plants indoors can be such a rewarding way to keep nature close year-round.

Since you’re bringing your Mediterranean Fan Palm inside for winter, a few tips might help it thrive in your colder climate: try to place it near a bright window where it can get plenty of indirect sunlight, avoid drafts from doors or windows, and keep the soil lightly moist—as this palm prefers consistent but not soggy moisture. Maintaining moderate humidity around the plant can also do wonders; using a humidifier or placing a tray of water near your palm can create a cozy atmosphere resembling its native environment.

If you ever notice yellowing leaves or slow growth, feel free to reach out—our team is always here to provide guidance tailored to your plant’s needs.

Wishing all the best connecting with your little slice of the south indoors!

Rooting for your garden’s success,
