Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Crave color, but don't have space for a large flowering shrub? Try the fabulous reblooming Maroon Swoon® Weigela (Weigela x 'Slingco 2' USPP26841) for a profusion of jewel-toned blooms. Don't worry, it will stay nice, tight, and compact, growing in a sweetly mounded shape.
This is one of the new-fashioned Weigelas and we just know you'll fall deeply in love with this exciting selection from Blooming Easy® Date Night™ series. The unusually deep dark maroon flowers are remarkable! And this shrub is just loaded with these rare color blooms. You'll immediately notice the deep maroon red the day the first bloom opens. It's a hot accent to your landscape.
Just be ready to see Hummingbirds and butterflies flocking to this plant! They adore those crimson, bell-shaped flowers, and so will you! The heaviest bloom is later spring and then later summer into fall. Don't worry, you will always be able to find flowers to cut for your indoor bouquets.
Vibrant, chartreuse new foliage matures into summer's rich, green leaves, which are a perfect complement. Much like you would for Roses, be sure to trim some of the lightly serrated foliage to offset the blooms in cut flower arrangements.
Discover Weigela all over again with this mid-sized, ornamental shrub. Any place you put a Maroon Swoon® draws your eye with its fantastic color and long-lasting display that bursts onto the scene in spring and persists throughout the summer and into autumn in USDA growing zones 4 to 8. Taller than wide, this deciduous shrub grows 4-5 feet in height and just 2-3 feet wide.
Planting and Application:
Maroon Swoon® Weigela is a terrific plant to create a long, colorful border at the back of your flower bed. Repeat these short shrubs at regular intervals to give your plantings a showy punctuation point that produces massive amounts of blooms.
Try these excellent deciduous shrubs on either side of your entrance. Maroon Swoon® Weigela are very modern foundation plants that effortlessly highlight your home. Use them in containers on your sunny porch or as a low potted hedge. Even just one gives a stunning splash of deep color that will persist all season. Use patio pots on your porch or along your pool deck. You will love the look!
Or, plant them closer together to create a fantastic, informal hedge that flowers all season. Plant them 2 1/2 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Hide those utility boxes and air conditioning units with these colorful, maintenance-free shrubs.
Don't forget to include some Maroon Swoon® in your Butterfly Gardens. Add to cutting gardens as the dramatic flowers are wonderful in arrangements!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
While Weigelas will tolerate a position in partial shade, they do bloom best in full sun. Give them at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. Provide well-drained soil and a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Top dress with a thick layer of wood chip mulch, but please take care to ensure the mulch doesn't touch the stems directly.
Because this plant blooms early in the season on last year's wood, it is best pruned in late winter or early spring. If you want to shorten your plant, please wait to remove any of the top growth until after the first round of flowers are finished. Rejuvenate your mature Maroon Swoon® Weigela by pruning out the oldest, fattest stems down to the ground every three years or so. Leave the thin, young stems to provide the most amazing blooms for you, your family, friends, and all those little hummingbirds and butterflies.
