The W. Murcott Mandarin (Citrus x reticulata 'W. Murcott'), also known as Afourer Orange, is one of the oldest varieties of Mandarins produced in Florida! Highly regarded for its increased chill tolerance compared to other Mandarin. You will fall in love with this fantastic variety!
You’ll be delighted by the white blossoms and their heavenly fragrance! Pollinators and even hummingbirds are drawn to them and you’ll enjoy keeping their fragrance close by as they perfume the inside of your home or outdoor seating areas! The glossy broadleaf evergreen foliage is another bonus, looking fantastic all year long and adding pinpoint shade or privacy to your outdoor spaces as well!
A precocious fruiting machine, you’ll enjoy your first harvest as early as 3-4 years of age! Ripening in the autumn, the tree filled with glistening orange fruit is a sight to behold! It is generally seedless and has a thin rind with bronze speckles around a deep orange juicy fruit which is easy to peel and separate the sections!
Planting and Application:
Aromatic foliage that fills out the canopy of your W. Murcott Mandarin creates fantastic hedges and privacy plantings in USDA hardiness zones 9-10! The lush year-round screening and juicy fruit are always welcome, so plant up a row of Citrus Trees along your property line and we’re sure your neighbors won’t mind! By mixing W. Murcott with other Mandarin that ripen earlier and later in the season, you'll not only increase pollination chances but also have healthy fruit for a longer period of time!
These are healthy snacks and kid-friendly treats! Their small size makes Mandarin perfect edible gardening trees too! Gorgeous front yard anchors and focal points on a raised berm, a Citrus tree in full bloom or dripping in orange orbs will have the whole neighborhood drooling! A backyard tree off of your deck or patio means healthful fruit within arm's reach and quite the conversation piece when entertaining friends and family!
These trees are more cold-tolerant than other Mandarins and can be grown in containers! Both in northern climates or in the ground in southern areas of the country. If you live in a colder climate, simply bring your tree indoors and place it near a sunny window for the winter, and let the intoxicating citrus scent brighten your home during cold winter days.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
W. Murcott has a tendency to produce fruit in alternating years if the fruit is allowed to remain on the tree for extended periods. Like all fruit trees, full sun is ideal for the most flowers and therefore, the most fruit! Provide an excellently drained location and moderate watering schedules, allowing the roots to dry out some between watering. It’s also important to provide regular fertilizer and an acidic environment. If pruning is desired, do so after harvest.
If the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range or are prone to overnight frosts, then you need to be ready to protect your tree.
Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.
In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.
In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.
